New US ambassador expected to arrive in Budapest this weekend

The new US ambassador, Greek-born Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis, is expected to arrive in Budapest at the weekend, the Hungarian embassy in Washington told MTI.

The new envoy could attend a reception for ambassadors to Budapest given by President László Sólyom on January 12.

Prior to her departure from Washington the new ambassador will meet Hungarian ambassador Béla Szombati in Washington.

The ambassador’s appointment by President Barack Obama was confirmed by the US Senate in December. She told her hearing in Congress on November 18 that she intends to help US investors in Hungary and to focus on economic and energy issues.
