President returns anti-graft authority law to parliament

Hungary’s President Laszlo Solyom has returned a law on setting up an anti-graft authority to parliament for review, the president’s office told MTI on Wednesday.

The law envisages setting up a national anti-corruption office, an autonomous body within state administration to focus primarily on public procurement and public interest in general.

Solyom vetoed the law because he rejected the wide time range in which its various decrees would come into effect, the last one in January 2011. The president also disapproved of the lack of consultations with public administration and procurement officials.

The government expressed satisfaction over the fact that Solyom had not challenged the constitutionality of the law.

Government Spokesman Domokos Szollar said the government would study the president’s critical remarks, and submit its proposals to parliament accordingly.

    (From the article above)

Are not those the guys who are going to be checked and the officials that organise any corruption?
Like asking the pig if he likes Christmas (Swedish saying).

Very true Viking. But in the immortal words of John Wyndham, author of “Animal Farm” – a satire on communism: “some pigs are more equal than others”..! And those pigs get to vote if they like Christmas or not!

    Hey, hey!
John Wyndham is famous for his SF novel “The Triffids” – but animal farm was written by Orwell – both books are among my favorites.

  4. Troutsky says:

Thanks.Yes I know Wolfi – but the mistake was intentional and keeps you avid readers on your toes!
The Triffids engaged my attention but I found it went on a bit..good story though!

Jedi–kés (Jedi knife), an invention of Dr. ZoltanTakáts.
The knife supplies information to a surgeon on whether the tissue being examined is cancerous or benign. The Arteriográf meanwhile enables the early diagnosis of arteriosclerosis. Space tourist Charles Simonyi reportedly helped to test another of the exhibits while on the International Space Station: the small Masat-1 satellite has its own planning and energy supply system and has sailed through test
the Wall Street Journal reports Dec 27 that a consortium led by South Korean companies has won a $20.4 billion contract to build four new nuclear reactors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The newspaper reported that the announcement was made in Abu Dhabi by UAE
President Laszlo Solyom was in Korea recently -purportedly on a trade mission. The truth is the Koreans are more interested in knowledgeable and under-employed Hungarian scientists. Have you worked out just why…?? (See above).
    PS
The Hungarian ambassador to Korea, Michael Lengyel, was showing hand-made porcelain and Tokaji wines. Is this the best we can offer?

A younger relative of my wife is a professor in nuclear physics – Where, you might ask ?
Of course in the USA – and his younger children don’t even speak Hungarian …
We hope to visit him this year and bring some fotos to his parents.
