Socialist candidate for MP calls for end to political bickering

Hungary’s politicians should start working together and ditch their pastime of feuding, the ruling Socialist party’s prime-minister candidate told commercial television channel RTL Klub on Friday.

“We have to stop political feuding and discover the national basics,” said Attila Mesterhazy.

Hungary is likely to hold is next general election in April this year, and the conservative opposition Fidesz are strongly tipped to win.

Viktor Orban, Fidesz’s leader, struck a similar note in his message for the New Year posted on his website earlier, saying that Hungary should undergo total renewal this year.

“We must formulate what we did wrong and what should be done differently in future,” Orban said.

President Laszlo Solyom made similar remarks in his New Year’s television address on Friday.

“2010 as an election year will offer a chance for a fresh start in politics and public affairs,” Solyom said.
