MDF head says Bokros only serious challenger to Orbán

The results of last year’s European Parliamentary elections prove that there is room in Hungary for a responsible conservative party, leader of the Democratic Forum Ibolya David told MTI in an interview on Wednesday.

David insisted that the party’s candidate for prime minister in the spring elections, Lajos Bokros, was the only serious challenger to Viktor Orban, leader of the main conservative opposition Fidesz.

David said that when Bokros — a former finance minister of the mid-nineties credited with pulling Hungary’s economy back from the brink — returned from Brussels as an MEP, the party would replace him with Gyorgy Habsburg.

She said the party would reveal its list of parliamentary candidates in mid-January.

David insisted that the Democratic Forum was the only parliamentary party which based its politics on values and a programme, and was therefore the only one in a position to make commitments to voters.

“Anyone who wants reform, honest answers and an expert programme can count on the Democratic Forum,” she said.
