Opposition Fidesz party leader Viktor Orban said on Tuesday that Hungary's next government should declare sports to be a strategic area.
Hungary should continue to see it as a national issue that its Olympic team finishes among the top ten on the medals chart, he told members of the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
Orban stressed the need to create all conditions for achieving this goal.
If other countries are able to provide one percent of their budget for sports, Hungary should do the same, too, he said.
Orban initiated a meeting with the committee members in late December to discuss the most urgent tasks of a "future sports-oriented government".
