The Socialist government will not make any major decisions – on personnel, state investments or subsidies – in the six-week period before the election, the government spokesman said on Wednesday.
Domokos Szollar said that Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai had told his cabinet to observe a moratorium on decision-making because “anyone could form the new government” and the current administration does not want to restrict its room for maneouvre.
The election is expected to take place in mid April so the moratorium will start on March 1, said Szollar.
Opposition Fidesz issued a statement condemning the decision, branding it a “cheap and cynical trick”.
