Fidesz announced on Tuesday it will mail letters to pensioners outlining its promises affecting them. The party has recently denied that it would adjust the current pension regime after its former finance minister Mihály Varga spoke in an interview with the weekly Figyelő of introducing a system based on the Swedish model.
The Socialists also intend to send information on their pension plans to 1.7 million households.
Fidesz MP László Iván told reporters that his party’s letter to 1.6 million households, to be signed by MEP Pál Schmitt, will also outline dangers lurking for pensioners. Fidesz will meet with pensioners’ organisations today, he added.
Fidesz will preserve the value of pensions and will prevent the privatisation of pension funds, caucus leader Tibor Navracsics declared in Veszprém on Tuesday.
Socialist chairwoman Ildikó Lendvai said her party is curious to see whether Fidesz has revoked Varga’s plans for introducing a Swedish model.
The Orbán cabinet decided to introduce nominal individual pension accounts in 2001, Népszava recalls, adding that the plan was scrapped by the Socialist government in 2002.
Privatising Pension Funds. I have now heard it all.
Is that not what the US have?
On the other hand, this is Europe and Fidesz has looked on the Swedish model before, but that they do not want to speak loud about today.
