Parties slam Orbán’s speech for ambiguousness

“A lot of talk and hardly any specifics,” Socialist Party prime ministerial candidate Attila Mesterházy said in reaction to Orbán’s speech on Friday afternoon.

Mesterházy said Orbán urged blindfolded people to follow him into the unknown, adding that “I have the feeling that Orbán is also afraid of giving specifics because he would then be removed from the Fidesz list.”

Mesterházy compared Orbán to Benito Mussolini, the prime minister of wartime fascist Italy at a press briefing on Saturday. He said nothing is nothing of Orbán’s Friday speech and this shows a similarity with Mussolini who before taking power, said “I want to govern, this is my platform.”

Orbán refused to reveal anything of what Fidesz wants in government, Democratic Forum spokesman Szabolcs Kerék-Bárczy said. He wants to subdue those financial institutions such as the National Bank and the financial supervisory Pszáf that significantly reduced the impact of conduct that pushed Hungary close to bankruptcy.
Christian Democrat spokeswoman Zsuzsa Halász called Orbán the hopeful prime ministerial candidate of a hopeful country. Anyone who claims that the Fidesz-Christian Democrat caucus alliance has no platform after this is deaf, she added.

Jobbik chairman Gábor Vona said Orbán’s speech glossed over details, but was an ideologically engaging campaign speech that lacked specifics. This justifiably raises the question what Fidesz’s platform is, or whether such a platform exists at all, two months before the elections, Vona said.

Some 38% of the 1,000 respondents to a Medián poll said Orbán should have presented more specific proposals two months before the elections; 34% said Orbán clearly formulated his platform; 25% said that Orbán did not have to outline Fidesz’s programme in this speech; and 3% did not know. The margin of error is 2-5%.

While not an Orban booster, I do not see why he would need to answer to any of the failed and corrupt Communist MSZP/SZDSZ jailbirds and MDF, the Communists’ puppet. If not for the Communists, David and Herenyi would have been stripped of their immunity and possibly in jail.
Only Jobbik has a right to criticize because they have a program on line. Everyone else deserves nothing

  2. Vándorló says:

@Mark: He is criticised for not giving details to the *electorate*, not to political parties and opposition. Or is it just for parties to talk to other party’s spokespersons in Jobbik’s rulebook? The rulebook from which Vona on Sunday reiterated his promise to close down TV2 and rtlklub. Vona just doesn’t know where government starts or stops and that power should lie in the hands of the people, not his to exercise at a whim.

  3. BallotBoxer says:

I don’t know the strengths and weaknesses of the Fidesz Party.
All of the Hungarians I have spoken with in recent months do not appear confident that Fidesz will change things for the better.
I have grave doubts that Orban Viktor is the man to lead us out of the wilderness.
I believe Fidesz should have appointed a new leader several years ago.
Orban looks washed up – and is!
@Mark. It is true that Jobbik has an 88/page document outlining their policies. Its a start…and something to build on.
Fidesz wants to keep us in suspense on how the circus will be run in future.

  4. Mark says:

Since other than Jobbik supporters all we have here is Communist MSZP/SZDSZ supporters, I have to defend Orban even if he is not one of my most favorite people list.
His supporters appear to be happy with his speech and they are the electorate or as Fidesz claims, 2/3 of electorate.
The Communist program needs no detailing. Most people know what they did to the country and how they stole or gave away what was not theirs to give. Orban’s popularity is not an indication of his charm or any special gift but the disgust, distrust and contempt people hold the Communist politburo and their puppets. Orban has nothing to fear from the Communists because they are so discredited that if he took a vacation until election day, Fidesz would still win. At least that is what they thought until Jobbik emerged as the new power. Jobbik’s popularity and success with limited funds is a marvel of true democracy at work.
Nobody knows how popular Jobbik is because the hate and harassment of Jobbik boosters on this list is nothing compared to the risks Hungarians take when they openly side with Jobbik. They will speak on election day and it would be a pleasant surprise for some and bitter disappointment for others.

  5. Mark says:

I will always treasure watching the faces of Communists after EP election.
That was a very pleasant surprise :-) )))

    @ Vandor;
With all due respect, I do not think that Vona should be singled out alone for conveniently forgetting where the power is suppose to lie.

  9. Vándorló says:

@justasking: With no respect whatsoever, only Vona and Jobbik are openly advocating and have a policy of curtailing free speech and interfering in directly closing commercial stations simply on the grounds that they disagree with the political orientation of the content.

  10. Law says:

Don’t forget about relocating the Soviet memorial,
and putting all the corrupt Politicians and business
people in Jail. Bokros the thieving lying bastard
who you support! Fuck off and get your priorities
right before pointing at a party that wants the best
    for it’s people and nation.

  11. Ricsi says:

I was with Vona Gábor on Sunday,he only mentioned those TV stations in passing-saying that those who do not allow free speech for all do not deserve the prime time TV space. When did you ever see Vona or Jobbik freely speaking on those channels? Never!
Get your facts right Gypsy Wanderer,Free speech means for ALL.

  12. justasking says:

    @ Vandor;
What a pity, you were born an asshole and will die an asshole.

Vona is deliberately playing on the outrageous remarks to get even more attention. That is also why they are not denying its support for different open pro-Nazi groups. At the moment it is hip to be ‘the most outrageous’
Whatever the final result will be on April 12, Vona will copy Csurka’s claims after every election since 2002, ‘the lying media’ scared people to vote on Jobbik
The Mouse-tactic is already prepared, it will be used even if every one agrees Jobbik made a good election. The Mouse-tactic will still be used, now with the added ‘we could have won!’
    -
The % will decide the number of MPs for Jobbik, but for me the number of votes is more interesting. Will they come over 500.000?
In the EP-election they did not.
    -
    Fidesz?
Boring and cowards, but they will take in Bokros in the end of the day. Fidesz will have to accept his terms, regardless they like it or not
I saw Orban this morning on M1, he looked tired and old, not as young and make-up as on his speech. Has he lost all his advisers and make-up people?

Was it not Mr. Farkas that wrote
‘Hungarians do not vote for anyone, just against’
Fits the Fidesz swing-voter rather good

  17. Knockabout says:

Ranting and raving. What does this achieve.
Nothing. Policies are what matter. Mark talks about supporters etc. We have potential voters on this site as well that have not yet made up their mind which way they will vote.
Screaming at each other only confirms in some respect what BobBunkerperson mentioned recently concerning Lincoln’s pithy remark about a fool remaining silent lest he should open is mouth and remove any doubt. Or some such – you get the picture anyway.

  18. Attila says:

“Mesterházy compared Orbán to Benito Mussolini, the prime minister of wartime fascist Italy at a press briefing on Saturday”
Does that mean that there will be exciting speeches :) ? Its a shame that most politicians seem so boring , if only every politician made a worthy effort into their speech, a few hand and verbal gestures here and there would make it more exciting :)
