Many of the 40% of the electorate who are still unsure about their party preference are Socialist voters, Socialist Party prime ministerial candidate Attila Mesterházy told a 150-strong local campaign forum in Szigetszentmiklós, Pest county on Wednesday evening.
Mesterházy claimed that Socialist governments have improved ordinary people’s standard of living in all walks of life, adding that government moves of recent years have not always ended in farce. The speedy formation of the crisis-management cabinet was in the nation’s interest, he added.
Although the Socialists knew many would bear the left wing a grudge over the austerity measures, they have managed to stabilise the economy, a fact recognised by international analysts, Mesterházy commented.
He dismissed as “mere window dressing” Fidesz’s claim that it does not know the real state of the country’s economy, pointing out that the present government has enabled any MP to ask the finance minister on the subject, something that Fidesz does not do.
Mesterházy later visited the Népszabadság editorial office, where he spoke of the government performance and lessons learned over the last eight years. He asserted that his party will make pledges that are acceptable, accountable and supported by economic data.

The most important lesson is to throw these criminals out of office, every one of them.
