Fidesz calls on Budapest mayor to resign over transport company scandal

Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz on Thursday said Budapest Mayor Gabor Demszky should resign over scandals at Budapest transport company BKV.

Istvan Gyorgy, head of the municipal committee investigating fraud allegations at BKV, insisted that large companies owned by the local council, especially BKV, had operated as “paying agencies” for the governing Socialist party and the liberal opposition Free Democrats.

“The government is deeply implicated in the BKV scandal,” Gyorgy said.

At a hearing for BKV and council leaders on Wednesday, Demszky criticised his deputy, Miklos Hagyo (Socialist), who was in charge of supervising BKV affairs, accusing him of shying away from conflict.

Asked why he had given Hagyo a free pass earlier despite general low opinion of his work, Demszky said he did not want to upset the delicate balance of power in the municipal council, where the Socialists and liberals only held a single-seat majority.

Demszky claimed earlier that he had first heard about the BKV scandal from the press and had no knowledge of the many suspected fraudulent contracts over which now three former BKV leaders are in detention.

Meanwhile the investigation committee is combing through over a thousand contracts, looking for any further discrepancies.

Hagyo on Tuesday resigned from his mandate in the Budapest municipal assembly and from running as a Socialist candidate in the general elections on pressure from the Socialist party presidium. Hagyo’s decision came after the online edition of commercial TV channel ATV reported, quoting police sources last weekend that two former directors of BKV, CEO Attila Antal and acting CEO Zsolt Balogh had made implications on Hagyo’s responsibility in the mismanagement of BKV’s affairs.

A legal investigation is under way against Antal on suspected involvement in severance payments worth millions of forints and in connection with BKV’s fictitious contracts with outside consultancies. The prosecutor’s office is also investigating the scope of responsibility of leading officials at the Budapest municipal council, including Hagyo, said atv.hu.

This time I’m (almost) in accord with Jobbik :
Let those guys rot in jail for a long time – and don’t forget to take back that illicit money (of course only if they’re proven guilty)

Reaction, like police work and court trials and voter judgement, is needed, but also some action to prevent this from happening in the future
The action is that the Public should nor *run* this kind of service themselves, it should be let out to a fixed price and agreed performance-level, with defined penalties if not met
If you take away the honey-pot, there will be less fingers in it
And if some employees steal from their company, it is not my problem if I am not the owner, but I am the owner to everything the City of Budapest and the Hungarian State owns. It is my tax money they are stealing

Fine comedy watching the Communists of MSZP and SZDSZ turning on each other proving once again that there is no honor amongst thieves, especially Communist thieves :-)

  4. Tetö says:

This little lot only goes to underscore that everything in Hungary is rotten to the core.
What plans are being made to combat this fraudulent activity in the future?
The Justice System is laughable at best and, the police have enough on their plate already.
If Jobbik wants to gain ground it has not only to speak about these matters but start planning how to dump the whole rotten barrel of apples into the “Hungarian Sea”.
A vote for Orban will not do the trick. The dismantling of SZDSZ and MSZP might help.

    Teto = flabby tit
The country did much better under an Orban
government and will do again with or without
Victor – the party is fundamentally and currently
the better side of Hungary the side with values
and hope – the socialist voters are largely
criminal go getting types whom are convinced that
they are not criminals and I agree with Mark he is
spot on and that saga is unfolding. The current
lot are criminals and all the talk talk talk in
the world is not going to cut it tit – and people
so passionate with their words should stop
whinging and perhaps stop hiding behing computers
and get out on the streets and do something about
it. Jobbik are Nazis! The police have nothing on
their plate? – they happen to be one of the
biggest slice percentages of crime in this
country. Everything here is not rotten to the core
and what is – is largely due to communism and MSZP
    Asta la nipple Tito x

Jack of nine tails/tales. Flabby tit here.
The police are currently investigating so many corruption scandals (some of their own making-agreed!) they hardly know where to begin.
I have a lot of Hungarian friends, do a lot of business here, and spend a lot of money.
For the past eighteen months I have been helping promote Hungary abroad. And assisted Hungarian businesses with various projects. I do it because I want to. I do not get paid.
Jack. You come over as a sort of loud-mouthed know all that sits on his arse and accuses others of doing nothing.
Vona and Morvai and Jobbik are making the effort. We shall see the outcome soon.
PS Jack = Fuckpig. Have a nice day, turd.

Do you expect to be able to promote Hungary better with “Vona and Morvai and Jobbik” calling the shots in the next Parliament?
Which would be the target-group abroad for that Hungary?

  8. Vándorló says:

@Viking: FlabbyTit is just that nutter who sometimes claims he is Hungarian, sometimes British, sometimes a teacher, sometimes a businessman, he has no firm views, but he only supports Jobbik, gets upset if you mention Soros, doesn’t like me (like I give a shit), nor Cináed, recently started getting upset with Bystander, in fact anyone that doesn’t share his opinions.
But he will tell you that he knows his own mind and has his own opinions – but never actually gets to explaining how they are formed and on what they are based.
Basically, he’s another sock-puppet for Jobbik.

  9. Mark says:

Why bother reading any of the posts when our “Irish” AVO snoopy the dog wonder tells us everything we need to know about all the posters and some more?
The Communist MSZP and SZDSZ are so corrupt that they would be banned in any country where laws count for something.

But is it not strange that MSZP/SZDSZ-politicians are investigated on their own watch?
One of the bearing thesis of Jobbik is that Democracy does not exists in Hungary today and MSZP/SZDSZ do what they want and this would never be allowed anywhere else in the world
If this was true, no investigation, no Zuslag-trial would be allowed, right?
Maybe the Jobbik-analyse of the current state of Hungary is not really that correct?

Van, yes that Flabbytit is one of the normal Jobbik-nameshifter’s is rather clear
But name-shifting seems to be the thing from that “party”
