Hungary supports the accession of Serbia with the European Union regardless of what government is in power, Chairman of the Hungarian parliament’s EU Affairs Committee Matyas Eorsi told the body at its session on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Serbian Parliament.
Eorsi said that enlarging the EU is Hungary’s national interest, which is hoped to contribute to stabilisation in several countries.
He called the statute declaring an increased autonomy of the northern Vojvodina province exemplary. The Parliament of Serbia adopted the basic law on the province, which has a large Hungarian community, on November 30 in 2009.
Gordana Comic, member of the Serbian Parliament’s committee for European integration, said they are familiar with the the details of the EU’s enlargement process during the 1990s, which she said helps Serbia’s integration.
The participants at the meeting also discussed a proposal according to which Serbia should request temporary exemption from a number of EU laws during its accession talks.
Regarding bilateral relations Zoltan Nogradi, the mayor of Morahalom, a town near the Serbian border, asked the Serbian delegation’s help in promoting cross-border cooperation in the Serbian government. Vlatko Ratkovic, head of the Serbian delegation, reassured the Hungarian side that developing those relations is also in Serbia’s interest.
