Socialist PM candidate Mesterházy to outline manifesto

Attila Mesterhazy, the Socialist party’s prime-minister candidate, will talk through the main points of his political programme at the weekend.

Sources close to the party told MTI that highlighted policies will include lengthening the moratorium on the purchase of farmland by foreigners beyond 2011, introducing a scholarship programme for vocational students and guaranteeing fast and affordable internet access to all Hungarian citizens from 2014.

Mesterhazy will also seek to convince voters that the Socialist party is the only credible force that can stop Fidesz, the conservative opposition tipped to win a landslide, from gaining too much power.

Other key policies are bringing in a 50 percent tax bracket for earners making over 1.5 million forints a month and introducing a Tobin tax.

That won’t be it, because whatever the program is, it’s not going to happen. They might as well promise heaven on earth (free palinka for everybody!) but the voters won’t care …
