Organisers expect thousands to attend an anti-fascist demonstration to be held against a neo-Nazi rally in Budapest on March 6, the organisers told a press conference on Friday.
The Green Left, the Hungarian Workers’s Party 2006 and the Democratic Network are organising the protest at a time and place yet to be confirmed with police, Adam Galba-Deak, head of the Democratic Network, one of the organising groups, said.
He said that they are urging world anti-fascist organisations, especially in Europe, to pledge support for the event.
The neo-Nazi rally will be organised on March 6 on Heroes Square by the National Revolutionary Party (NFP) to commemorate the “Day of Honour”, the break-out of German and Hungarian soldiers from Buda Castle besieged by the Soviet Army in February 1945.
Friday’s Nepszava daily reported that the Hungarian Anti-Fascist League, the Hungarians Against Nazis, the Civilians Against the Extreme Right and the Left-Wing Feminist Network will hold a silent demonstration against the neo-Nazi rally by the Museum of Fine Arts on Heroes’ Square at 1 pm on March 6. Police has already given permission for that gathering. Left-wing organisations from Dresden will also join the protest and help in the organisation, the paper said.
Police originally banned the neo-Nazi rally, citing traffic concerns, this, however, was later overruled by a court which gave the go-ahead to the event.
