PM urges Socialists, Fidesz to jointly combat extremism

Hungary’s Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai on Monday urged cooperation against extremism between the ruling Socialists and main opposition Fidesz

Addressing parliament’s last pre-election session, Bajnai said Fidesz leader Viktor Orban and the Socialist PM-candidate Attila Mesterhazy had one thing in common: they were both democrats and patriots.

“This common denominator could be enough to help combat the far right threat in Hungary,” he said.

Bajnai added that the “fanatic opposition” of the two parties has created a monster, which is fed by hatred and division.

He added that the radical nationalist Jobbik wrecks the country by making scapegoats instead of offering solutions.

“Jobbik is fishing in troubled waters if it attributes all problems to corruption, shortcomings in public security and incomplete integration of the Roma community. All are aware of these problems … but Jobbik’s answers would only generate even bigger problems and ruin the country,” he said.

Bajnai said Fidesz and the Socialists have more features in common than the two parties and Jobbik have. “The two big parties should fight with one another so that democracy should not become the loser. If the extreme right is the rejoicing third, then the other two parties will be defeated,” he said.
