PM Bajnai holds talks with special US envoy on energy issues

Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai met U.S. Ambassador Richard L. Morningstar, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s special envoy, in Budapest on Tuesday evening for talks on energy supply.

The ambassador, who helps realise the US energy policy objectives in the Eurasian region, arrived in Budapest to attend the extended Visegrad Four summit on energy security on Wednesday.

Morningstar outlined the US views about, and support for, efforts to enhance European energy security, establish a southern energy corridor and build the Nabucco natural gas pipeline.

Bajnai said that diversifying gas import sources and supply routes, and guaranteeing safe gas supply, are of key importance for Hungary.

The prime minister confirmed that Hungary gave priority to implementing the Nabucco project.

By hosting the energy summit on Wednesday, he said, Hungary, as current president of the Visegrad Four, would seek to emphasis that energy security is a highly important issue for Central Europe and the European Union as a whole.
