Florian Farkas, head of Hungarian Roma federation Lungo Drom, called on members to support the main conservative Fidesz party at the upcoming general elections, in his address to the federation’s congress in Szolnok (C) on Saturday.
Farkas argued that the incumbent Socialist government had pursued “anti-Gypsy policies” during the past eight years and labelled it as a criminal activity.
Moreover, the Roma leader said that “no fundamental positive change” had occurred in the situation of his community since the fall of communism in 1989.
According to a statement Farkas sent to MTI, the congress adopted a new programme of Roma inclusion based on actual assistance rather than a paternalistic attitude by the state.
Participants at the congress were addressed by Fidesz parliamentary group leader Tibor Navracsics, who said that his party’s government would be one of “unity, security, prosperity and predictability” with a special focus on job creation.
