Analysts expect intensifying campaign

Political analysts expect the campaign for the April general elections to intensify in the coming weeks and differ from the previous ones.

Presenting a volume on European campaign strategies on Monday evening, Agoston Samuel Mraz of Nezopont Institute and Attila Gyulai of Political Capital assessed the ongoing election campaign.

For the first time since Hungary’s return to democracy 20 years ago, it appears to be certain who will become the country’s next prime minister, Mraz said, referring to the huge lead of Viktor Orban’s main opposition Fidesz party in recent polls.

He added, however, that there are still some question marks. It remains to be seen, for instance, which party will become the second strongest parliamentary force and whether conservative Fidesz will be able to acquire a two-thirds majority in parliament, he said.

Gyulai expects the campaign to intensify until the first round on April 11 and become tougher than ever in the two weeks until April 25, the second round.

The parties will spare no effort to mobilise their potential voters by trying to reach them not only through the media but also over the internet and mobile phones, he said.

The analysts agreed that the elections would pose the biggest challenge to the conservative Democratic Forum and the ruling Socialists who are expected to face “tough in-fighting” after the elections. The green LMP party, they said, may bring the biggest surprise.

The word is out that Lendvai is getting another botox treatment to campaign as a youthful democrat, not as a washed up old commie of the Kadar era.
