Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney did not rule out the reintroduction of travel visas for Hungarians yesterday, saying Hungary is becoming Canada’s number one source country for asylum seekers.
The number of Hungarian refugee applications to Canada rose to over 1,350, nearly five times more than in 2008, the Toronto Star reported yesterday. The four Hungarian nationals who applied for refugee status after flying over to attend the Vancouver Winter Olympics, are reportedly Roma, the daily added.
A Hungarian-Canadian team is working to ensure that visa exemption prevails between the two countries, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry responded. Hungary’s visa exemption agreement with Canada came into effect on March 2, 2008.

First, the Racist, Nazi, Arrowcross Swedes and now Canadians want no gypsies.
Hey Bystander, can they send them to Israel?
Maybe, they should send them to Turkey. They would blend right in…
Mark has a problem reading again
We speak about people applying for ‘Asylum on Political grounds’
It is not normal to grant that for anyone coming from an EU member state
That is it
Even a Swedish Viking would not be able to claim Political Asylum in Hungary, or even in Canada, at least before April 12
Now when the ‘Debrecen Nazi’ have been caught for the random serial killings of innocent Roma in Eastern Hungary, any Roma getting out of Hungary are more seen as Economical Refugees and for those there are different rules
That is very racist and anti-gypsy, great king of bili.
I happen to be a Canadian living in Toronto, Ontario Canada. For what its worth many people come to Canada to see asylum. We are a nation of peace, welcome to take all who wish to live here. Toronto for instance is the most multicultural city on earth according to the united nations. Its just that when we stop asking for Visas from eastern european nations, middle eastern countries as well as african nations the number of people applying for refuge status increases. Its not that we do not want people to live here but we cannot afford to pay for everyone who wants to. If we allowed everyone who wanted to move here do so then we would be bankrupt. If people want to live here then they should do so with money to do so and go through the immigration process. If people from poor countries want to start moving here en masse then I support requiring them to have a visa. As a Canadian, I cannot allow people from poorer nations to move here on refuge grounds simply becuase where they come from is too poor to live. If they are coming from Iraq then I understand them coming here as a refugee and I am ok with that but if you people come here as a refugee because their home country is poor then I do not support that decision. My tax dollars go to support people that come here as refugees, I should not have to support people who want to come here for the heck of it. If your home country is poor than apply for immigration, not refugee status. Hungary is not war-torn, they are not refugees
@Richard White:
Thank you for your insight!
Anyway it would be much better for the developed countries (read: rich countries) like Canada, USA and (parts of) the EU to invest more in those poorer countries to help the people there (at home), not to take a few refugees in.
That would be much more efficient – but of course it’s difficult, I know, most of the “help” goes to the wrong people …
