The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down plans to build a NATO radar station on the Tubes hill near Pécs, revoking the decree issued by the Budapest Municipal Court on November 29.
The Supreme Court said the Budapest court did not have the authority to reject challenges to the project. In addition, the lower court should have appointed an expert who could have ascertained what environmental and health damage the radar station might cause.
Moreover, the Court said, state authorities broke rules on construction and environmental protection in proceeding with the plan.
The Defence Ministry must now start a completely new procedure to find a site for the radar station.
Hundreds of people celebrated in Pécs upon hearing the news. The appeal against the Budapest court's decision had been submitted by NGOs that oppose the radar installation.
Hungary agreed to construct a radar station as part of a wider NATO network as a condition of joining the alliance. The Horn government chose the Zengő hill, also near Pécs, an idea furthered by the Orbán cabinet.
After resistance from environmentalists defeated that project in 2004, the Gyurcsány government selected the Tubes hill in 2005.
Environmentalists and other activists have opposed that project from the beginning.
The Defence Ministry will see if any other locations can be used instead of the Tubes hill, said spokesman István Bocskai.
Just toss Hungary out of NATO, at least they will have the MG to protect them.
Hungary does not need any military facilities used or targeted by the major powers. There are countries that like to be targets, let them offer to install these stations. No one is going to aim a ballistic missile at Hungary because Hungary has no military significance. Germany, France and countries like that should jump at the opportunity.
The Soviets kept nuclear weapons on Hungarian soil and every Hungarian knew that they were not protecting Hungary but endangering instead.
If the big boys want to shoot each other up, they should leave Hungary out of it.
LOL, clearly you think that if there ever was a exchange of ABMs between the US and Russia, which is really not the point anymore, that the fallout would know to leave Hungary out of it. If anything, you would want Hungary to take a direct hit and have it all over rather than a slow, lingering, radiological death.
on this, I agree that Hungary shouldn't have any part of this 'missile shield' thing. Ok, so fallout doesn't discern between countries, but neither is that the point for me. The missile thing is a hangover from the Bush 'war on everything that isn't us'...oops, I meant to type 'war on terror'. What does Hungary have to gain by being involved in that? Nothing. The cold war is 'supposedly' over, so why is everyone trying to build more 'defences'? Seriously, if Iran wanted to blow someone up, the missiles are going to go more westward for about half the distance. I actually agree with something (I think) Pav said ages and ages ago that building up military forces just gives NATO something to do to justify its continued existence. I'm kind of ambivalent about NATO.
The solution then is to pull out of NATO, I don't even think anyone would notice.
@C'est moi:
Now I get it!
The following is from Jobbik's program:
"Our homeland, situated in the very centre of Europe and at a strategic point of impact, requires a fighting force consisting of a standing army 40,000 strong, increasable as necessary by a reserve fighting force of 10,000; in addition to which, the protection of the country’s hinterland necessitates the creation of a territorial defence entity some 20,000 – 22,000 persons strong."
Of course these proud troops will defend the Hungarian hinterland against NATO or whatever ...
BTW: There's an old joke:
Don't you think we two together with our illegitimate children would be strong enough to mount a war against Hungary ?
Of course my wife would object ...
@BJ: We actually have more immediate problems. Magyar Nemzet today reported an Israeli spy plane's over-flight of Hungary.
http://www.mno.hu/portal/701501
The plane approached the Ferihegy landing strip twice, did not land, and flew out of the country. The Foreign Ministry and the Defence Ministry are not able to explain, neither is the traffic authority. The Israeli ambassador says it was a regular training exercise. Orbán is demanding an explanation. Bajnai is yet silent. This sounds nasty.
I saw and heard the roar of the plane!
Extraordinary. Whatever next?
@Elle
You are absolutely right. Today, the greatest and most imminent threat to Hungary’s independence and survival as a free nation is Israel aided by their agents who live in Hungary telling us that they are just as Hungarian as the next one while their loyalty, absolute total loyalty is to Israel.
@planespotter:
Then you must know where it dropped my money and instructions - give'em back to me tout'de suite!
Bajnai is yet silent. This sounds nasty.

Above is from MTI English
Normally means that in Hungarian original it happened several hours before
And in English it happened close to 5 hours before 'elle/sophie/tunde' got her thinking cap on
But maybe the news travel slowly to 'down under'?
BJ: This really is scary. Even the MTI report (it exists, according to Magyar Nemzet) is not coming up on Google. The only English report is this one, which Google claims was posted 4 minutes ago:
http://www.budapestreport.com/2010/03/18/israeli-jets-scout-hungary/
(And my bloody radio is playing up -- I cannot get any Hungarian reception. I wish I had stayed at home. If you manage to catch any news, please let me know.)
@Elle:
please stay where you are -if you can't hear Hungary, then maybe Hungarians can't hear you ..
And you don't have to come back - or here or whereever, just stay out of sight ...
I'd be interested to know what kind of planes they were. The photo of the on in the article linked to from here is a U2 spy plane...actually, the photo is lifted from the Wikipedia page on the U2.
-
It also seems unlikely it was spying...I mean, why bother? Spying on what? Whatever information they might want that is visible from the air, I'm sure they could get by other, less obvious means...like paying the government to do a flight by the Hungarian airforce for them.
...and it makes little operational sense to be approaching the airport twice but then not landing...hardly stealthy.
-
Update...apparently, the 'spy planes' were Gulfstream Vs. For those who don't know, the Gulfstream V is a business jet...much like the well known Learjet. it's not a spy plane at all.
@ Cinaed
Oh, for Heaven's sakes. I am getting sick of your insisting in dealing with facts and refusing to believe in Conspiracy theories, unfounded allegations and not engaging in personal attacks.
Not once have you told anyone to Fuck Off. Shame on you
If you deny that Israel's number one target is Hungary then you are clearly anti-Hungarian, Jewish and you are lying about your whereabouts. You are clearly in Israel learning Hungarian and we all know why
I am off to help plan next year's gay parade - I am a Jewish Lesbian born in Israel and proud of it. (My husband and kids are blissfully unaware of this, know but they don't read this website. I feel so relieved after my confession)
Cináed: you might be an expert on aeroplane types. I am not. But do you feel confident about identifying a plane you have not even seen? A tad adventurous, perhaps? Have a look at Bobs' analysis on this page:

@Olga:
On our flight to SFO next week we promise to spy on you, though I don't know how near the plane will be to Toronto ...
So please put up the Flag at your house - then we'll drop the money and your instructions ...
Greetings from a fellow Mossad agent ...
I was going on a page sourced from MTI. That's where it was stated that the planes were Gulfstream Vs. The Israeli military does use this plane...mostly for flying important people around, but also fits them out for electronic early warning and electronic surveillance, similar to the US AWACS, but probably without the big piggy back Smarty. The electronic surveillance planes are used to fly around and watch for incoming targets, and for monitoring radio communications. Now if it turns out it's a different plane, no problem, I'll tell you if that fits. In any case, it still makes no operational sense to do a low level 'spy' mission that is so damn obvious.
'In any case, it still makes no operational sense to do a low level 'spy' mission that is so damn obvious.'
Really? What if it was meant to be obvious? Sabre-rattling events usually are. You need not be worried, of course. But believe me, we are.
Elle...see the other thread for response.

From now on please don\'t talk about your (and your friends) being Brave Proud Hungarians (I\'m paraphrasing)... What, are you afraid they\'ll start dropping bombs? People dressed in tennis gear will knock on your door?

After all your tough talk ad nauseaum, you look like such cowards reacting like this, please be a Man or Woman and keep a stiff upper lip... Each time you tell us about how you breathlessly call the embassy or how you\'re doing Sudoku now to calm your nerves you just make yourself look MORE like \'pussies\'! Please keep your private nail-biting to yourself, it\'s an embarrassment to the other \'proud warriors of Jobbik\'!! (end sarcasm)
Just saw the report on MTV1
it seems the planes also flew over Romania and Bulgaria (and probably a few more countries) to come to Hungary - so relax, you're not alone ...
Mossad spies are everywhere! (Is that good enough, Law ?)

Our incontinent puppy is such an expert on Hungary that he has actually forgotten that it is a landlocked country and that therefore, for any airplane to reach it, it must by definition first fly over another European country.
Or alternatively he is such an expert on Israeli military aircraft that he thinks their G5s can materialize - like in Star Trek - in the air space of one country and then just disappear.
And it seems that objecting to having your airspace violated by a foreign military power is an indication of cowardice. Apparently the really really brave are the citizens of nations who let just anybody's military do anything they please in their country... Tell me little puppy, did you get that from Clausewitz or Sun Tzu?
Those that do not agree with this strategy are condemned to a life of buying diapers and shitting themselves, it seems. Well boys.
We'll soon see whose shitting themselves for real on April 12th, won't we?
Wolfi you keep up your shit you will regret you ever crossed me
@Bobflying over the cuckoo's nest:
So that's why you want to reverse TRIANON - so you might become a Navy power again ?
Do you think you might get a job in the Jobbik Navy ?
It seems the Israelis asked every country's authorities for permission - and nobody said "NO" - strange, don't you think so ?
Of course, a Jobbik government would have sent their Gripen fighters (or would you rather have some MIGs ?)
PS: The Israli planes sure could have taken another route via Italy, Austria or other NATO members, so what ... Should these countries also be afraid or are they already in Mossad hands ?
I'm in a good mood today, so just to remind you, here's a gem I found:
"Clearly, Viking either purposefully shits on his conrflakes because he likes the taste of faeces in the Morning
bob...09.10.09"
Now was that a complete sentence ?
Ctrl-F
Search term "Trianon"
Do you find anyone else here talking about it in this thread? Nope. Just you.
And your crazy little fantasy world.
Yet again.
Silly puppy.
@b uggerBob:
I'm sorry, but I thought that TRIANON has to be mentioned at least once in every Jobbik paper - ah, I meant to say every thread here ...
PS: What about my questions ?
