Ethnic Croats to be represented in Hungarian parliament

Ethnic Croats living in Hungary are respected members of the society and will be represented in parliament, Hungary’s Speaker of Parliament Pal Schmitt said in Zagreb on Tuesday after talks with his Croatian counterpart.

Schmitt, who started a two-day official visit in Croatia on Tuesday, first met his host Luka Bebic, the Speaker of Croatia’s parliament, the Sabor.

He expressed thanks to Croatia for “its exemplary care provided to ethnic Hungarians living in the country”, and assured his Croatian counterpart that Hungary took care of its ethnic Croat minority in a similar way.

“Hungarian-Croatian relations are free from problems. Hungary’s foreign policy gives priority to promoting Croatia’s EU accession, and friendly and peaceful cooperation between the two nations,” Schmitt said.

Bebic qualified the ties between the two nations as exemplary, providing a sound basis for a “stronger, more intensive” cooperation after Croatia’s EU accession.

    Croats are good people.

  2. Dob utca says:

@LököttHomie: Yes, Croats are good folk, but your grasp of Hungarian history is as shallow as ever. Ever hear of the Battle of Pákozd? Josip Jelačić? Ever hear of 1848, or did they remove your brain along with your kidneys at that clinic?

  3. LHVJ says:

@DobottHomo: Hungary had conflicts with most of her neighbors and most of Hungary’s neighbors had conflicts with each other in the past. It is no reason to be hostile towards the Croats who are some of Hungary’s best friends.
Battle of Pákozd was a long time ago but the Communist murderers are still destroying Hungary.

  4. Tibor says:

Croats are our allies. Go there on a summer holiday and they treat you well. Croats are the type of people who will always respect those we have helped them. During their war Hungarians helped them. We may need their help in return one day. Oh and they also got some awesome ladies.

  5. Lucas says:

Dob, at one point in time everyone in Europe fought each other. Stupid lusts for power and bad governments, kings etc. You nasty comments againist Croats is unwarranted. If I had to go to war I would be comfortable with a Croat by my side.

  6. LHVJ says:

The same goes for Poland. These countries are Hungary’s natural allies and friends and these friendships need to be preserved and treasured.
The strength gained from Hungary’s friendship with these countries can be used as stepping stones to work out some of the differences with Hungary’s other neighbors.
Those who try to set Hungary against these natural friends are not interested in Hungary’s welfare.

A Croat anyday compared to a deceptive Aske”nazi” jew

  8. justasking says:

That’s what I was always told, that Horvat and Lengyel people are/always have been Hungary’s best friends and vise versa.

  9. Anonymous says:

@Law – But who would the Croat choose? A deceptive Ashkenazi Jew or you? Neanderthals don’t rank very high on anyone’s list.

  10. Peter says:

Ok dob utca admit it your a Serb. Croats are on good relations with us. No need to go any further on this topic. May her and Hungry prosper. BTW I’m going there in two weeks for some fun in the sun.

Wonderful news! Now let’s make that border disappear between Croatia and Hungary… It’s unnatural.

  16. wolfi says:

Borders between most European countries have already disappeared – haven’t you noticed ?

  17. TiborB. says:

“..will be represented in parliament…” – How to understand it? Either some croatian were elected in elections short time ago, or there is a chance that some will be elected 4 years from now in next elections… But neither or this two options fits the wording in article…

  18. justasking says:

    @GK,
Your post is unfair, to say the least. You seem to forget, the first 1000 years of peaceful co-existence.
So much was happening in Europe in the time frame that you are referring too. All of Europe was going through ‘romantic nationalism’.
Hungary was no different, they wanted National Independence just like the Slavs did.

  19. justasking says:

    @Tibi,
He is just saying that they (Croatian Hungarians)will have a voice, where it can make a difference, in Parliament Issues specific to the needs/interest of the Croatian Hungarian Community.
Stop being so suspicious. It’s how it should be done in a democracy.
Minorities having a voice/say in concerns that effect them specifically and not told by the majority what they think should be their concerns.

  20. TiborB. says:

    @justasking
All right. I just understood that words “will be represented in parliament” means that they would have some elected deputies in parliament. So it is just language issue – misunderstanding on my side…
But to use oportunity of you being here (reading this), I found on wiki following: “On 29 October 1918, the Croatian Sabor (parliament) declared independence, creating the new State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs.” This is very similar to what czech+slovaks done in the very close date. But I see that you magyars have no hard feeling against croatian. Why is it?

  21. justasking says:

    @Tibi,
I forgot to add this to my last post. What I am about to share with you, please, do not take as an insult. It just goes to help explain my wonky sense of humour.
I am having a hell of a time getting my son to poop on the potty, peeing is not an issue, just the bowel movements.
Anyhow, I have promised this child toy trucks, cars etc…nothing seems to work.
I adore dogs and so does my son. So, I promised my son, if he poops on the potty, I’ll get him a dog. I started looking for dogs at the SPCA, a place where unwanted animals go for adoption.
I found a Siberian Husky cross pup about 4 months old. Great, what too name the little guy.
Well, I’m Hungarian and I want him to have a Hungarian name; but, I want to respect his heritage.
I thought of calling him Tibor…what do you think? :D D

  22. TiborB. says:

    @justasking
Few years ago we were in Austria (alps), there were older french couple and thay had a dog – Tibor. First time I heard them call it, I though they called me…
So I see no problem with you dog named Tibor. :)
Purportedly name Tibor is derived from roman name Tiberius. Better than having hungarian origin, isn’t it? :)

  23. justasking says:

    @Tibi,
It was bound to happen that the Slavs were going to break off from Hungary eventually, in my opinion. It was just a matter of time.
    It was how it happened.
Where my objections come in… was how through lies, deceit and the making fictitious historical claims, especially from Czechoslovakia and Romania, that Hungary was not ‘punished’ for it’s role in WWI, it was intentionally destroyed through hate from the aforementioned countries.
When you have countries built/rewarded via that kind of hate, there will never be peace on those lands. I can not see how that could happen, the hate would run too deep.
The Croatians did not do this.
It came down to who had a better leader at the time…and it sure was not the Hungarians.

  24. justasking says:

    @Tibi,
Tibor’s origin is Hungarian meaning Holy Land
I know it just plain kills you to be associated with us, but hey, your the one on a English speaking Hungarian web-site.
Why is that I wonder…we more tolerant of you? Fell more at home? Why not just move to Hungary?

  25. TiborB. says:

    @justasking
I have no knowledge how departure of romanian or croatians in 1918 were done, so I cant say how much the difference you mentioned is your feeling or if it is something real. I take it as your opinion…
Do you thinks that czech hated you (magyars) then? You surely understand that czech were the main force in events before 1918.
    for meaning of Tibor see:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibor :
Tibor is a Hungarian form of a masculine forename, which derives from the Latin meaning the river Tiber (Tiberius) or, more loosely, “holy place”.

  26. TiborB. says:

And yes, why I am on a hungarian website…..
Maybe it is „Know you enemy“?
No, it is not so simple. :)
I’m right now saturated of discussion on slovak websites, and this is something new for me.
Or I just want to know something more about you magyars. I dont speak magyar so this website is one of very few possibilities for me…
And it is not that you are more tolerant of me. I cant remember when somebody called me idiot (or any similar word) in any slovak website. :)

  27. Common Sense says:

    TiborB
“I cant remember when somebody called me idiot (or any similar word) in any slovak website. :)
Next time you’re on a slovak website, pretend to be a Magyar. It should bring out the nice, juicy insults.

    @ Common,
That was funny and oh, so true! :)

  29. TiborB. says:

I see. Providing that we would talk about some sensitive topics and I would use words like “treason” or “tots” or try to come up with own version of history…:)

  30. M.R. says:

    Ad. Common Sennse:
“Next time you’re on a slovak website, pretend to be a Magyar. It should bring out the nice, juicy insults.”
Given that there is more than half a milion of Slovak citizens of Hungarian nationality living in Slovakia and a lot of them discuss on Slovak websites, it is not uncommon to see a “magyar” in discussion presenting their views. I have seen a lot of nice and even tough discussion on a subject but never seen any insults just because of the ethnicity. Maybe it’s not so bad in Slovakia…

  31. wolfi says:

It seems not all neighbouring countries love all Hungarians:
“The last week, EMI (Egyesült Magyar Ifjúsági Mozgalom) organized the 7th EMI camp, a cultural event for young people. As part of the program, the popular Kárpátia rock band supposed to perform during the event; however, Serbian authorities denied members of the rock band entering into Serbia.” (from hungarianambience – find the link yourself if you don’t have it already like Law …
Anybody know the kind of music that this grop performs ?
    I have a hunch …

  32. Common Sense says:

    wolfi
    “I have a hunch …”
    So you’re a hunchback. Figures…

  33. Paul says:

yes wolfi, it appears that rock music is now illegal in serbia. if you are hungarian, that is.
hungary had a joint bid with croatia for euro 2012. i would say that suggests strong ties between the nations today. anyone suggesting otherwise runs the risk of looking fairly ignorant.

  34. Paul says:

and for anyone interested in the topic wolfi has raised……
Kárpátia are a (fantastic) rock/folk band with a large youth following, particularly in rural and lost hungarian areas. many of their songs can be found easily on youtube, just search “Kárpátia”. they produce a very nice mix of traditional/folk/acoustic and rock music. their songs have a mix of patriotic, romantic and traditionalist themes, but are strictly apolitical.
how a hungarian folk/rock band can be denied entry to serbia to play in an ethnic hungarian village, which is literally metres from the border with hungary, is simply undefensible.
or is it only discrimination if hungarians do it to others? where are the liberal filth condemning the serbs for a clear act of targeted discrimination against an ethnic minority? imagine the uproar if a hungarian government denied entry to, say, a gypsy band, on purely racist grounds. surely it would be reported in the media as “xenophobia”,”facism” etc etc etc etc (we all know how it goes)???
note also that Kárpátia has previously played unhindered in serbia, as well as slovakia, croatia, romania, austria, yugoslavia and even france!

  35. wolfi says:

About Kárpátia band from lastfm (Internet radio):
Kárpátia ist eine rechtsnationale ungarische Band, die aufgrund ihrer nationalistischen Texte äußert fragwürdig erscheint.
    Some comments on http://www.lastfm.de/music/K%C3%A1rp%C3%A1tia:
Trianon was a punishment for stupidity, and according to your “logic”, you should worship the Abo culture or get out of Australia. If Hungarians keep being stupid and don’t open their eyes to what manipulation they’re dragged in, they might even lose the small piece land they still have. So you can either shut your mouth, either get some balls and fight us to get the lands back, cause’ all this Karpatia emo whining and bitching is just ridiculous and doesn’t impress anyone.

  36. Vándorló says:

@Paul: Let’s face it, as others have noted before Kárpátia’s music is just copycat, derivative, crappy versions of Western stuff, sung in a language that doesn’t suit the tempo, rhythm or melody. What, exactly, in Hungarian about them? Sad western wannabees, the lot of them.

  37. Vándorló says:

To appreciate why people think they are unwelcome nationalist agitators and perhaps unwelcome in bordering regions, listen to one of their (shite) songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKrVo3dfRvk

  38. Paul says:

whoa relax there wolfi. Kárpátia have some very beautiful and touching songs, as well as some clever and uplifting numbers. if you get your opinions on music from random internet sites, i can understand you probably wouldnt know that.
not sure what your “abo” reference is supposed to mean, but i am sure that its totally irrelevant. and just so you know, “abo” is consider a mildly offensive term in australia.
“Trianon was a punishment for stupidity” – wow that is a pretty big call. and a really dumb (and offensive) one if you know anything about hungarian history. if you hate hungary so much, why hang around these forums?
“Karpatia emo whining and bitching”. not sure what that means either. might i remind you that it was you – not i – who first mentioned my favourite band in this thread? i thought i had answered your original question (“Anybody know the kind of music that this grop performs ?”) quite thoroughly and exactly. so you are welcome!

  39. Paul says:

couldnt help but notice you linked me to a Hungarica song there (who are not apolitical) – who play a more western style of rock than Kárpátia (who are apolitical), granted. why that infuriates you, i am not sure.
i am not a fool – i understand that Kárpátia (and all hungarians in general, really) are still unwelcome in certain border territories. i dont understand how that justifies blocking the private passage of individuals between european states. whether you like them or not, these people are musicians, and hungarian citizens, not terrorists.
    .
the opinions expressed through their music should not determine whether they are barred from entering countries whose governments disagree with them. that kind of thinking, which you seem to support, is usually called “facist” or “xenophobic” or “censorship”.

  40. wolfi says:

    @Paul:
My god, how stupid can you get!
That was a quote, a comment on lastfm’s forum.
    Can’t you read ?

  41. Paul says:

and because you failed dismally to even link to a song actually by Kárpátia, i will do it myself. the first youtube result in fact, for the interest of anyone who DOESN’T get their musical opinions from random websites:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbBn_4Tg_iw
quite a nice song i think. clearly i missed the alleged rechtsnationale, szélsőséges, racist, neo-nazi, facist, xenophobic, (etc..) lyrics in this one.

  42. Paul says:

why would i read the comments in your link? chances are good that i know the band’s music far better than any of those people. after all, i can actually understand the songs, i understand what they mean in their context, and i have listened to them all myself, rather than relying on second-hand information as you have.
im interested to know why you quoted these comments, rather than checking the facts for yourself. are you that lazy?

  43. wolfi says:

The link to lastfm should be:
    http://www.lastfm.de/music/K%C3%A1rp%C3%A1tia
Don’t know where that “:” at the end came from

  44. Paul says:

and if i was a douche like you, i would link to a random website and say “ha there. some people on a random website (lastfm of all places!) agree with me. therefore i am correct, without having to actually know a thing about whatever im condemning today”. nice tactic.

  45. Paul says:

  46. Curious George says:

@Paul – Ouch. What an awful noise there on that first song. I turned it off after the 1st 3 lines. That’s your favourite band?
Here’s my favorite Hungarian rock group & song. It’s also nationalist, but I like it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvC3dF8kQa0

  47. Paul says:

george, check out the link that I posted. its to the band in question. the link you accidently clicked on was a dishonest distraction by Vándorló. apologises for his actions there.

  48. Lucas says:

After reading some comments here I get the feeling that some question as to why the Croats left us. They should have stayed as part of greater Hungry. The Croats were their own tribe that entered in the 6th century. Their orgin is murky. Some claim that they were Persians, Goths, Slavs or a combination of all three. Their history is filled with blood shed. Do they not have a right to exist in their own state? Did they not fight the Ottoman onslaught with us WW1 and WW2? Did they not earn their right to exist?
They speak a Slavic tongue but when you compare them to say a Russian they do not look alike. Anyhow their nationlism is directed at reclaiming Bosnia and keeping Serbia at bay.

  49. wolfi says:

    @paul:
I can’t understand those “nice” lyrics, but if Kárpàtia is such a wonderful band, why is hungarianambience complaining about the Serb authorities ?
Or the other way round: can you think of any reason why Serbia doesn’t want the band ?
What could be wrong with their music – or thei lyrics ?

  50. Vándorló says:

@Paul: Kárpátia or Hungarica, who cares, they are all shite.
And you say Kárpátia aren’t political? Someone should tell their audience, because those fools haven’t heard the bad news.
Anyway, here’s something similar from Hungarica. Listen to the stroke patient sink http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbBn_4Tg_iw

Croatia have had big problems with its own fascists and they may want to keep foreign fascists out. It is their choice who they define good or bad
Karpatia and Hungarica and Divizio88 and ‘something with a rotten cherry nut’ and etc, all play for basically the same audience, that listen to typical White Power music also
Croatia is not an EU member states, so any EU freedoms do not apply there, but that should just make all EU-hating Hungarian fascists happy…

  53. Common Sense says:

Anyone who calls a lame rock group “fascist” is obviously a complete retard.
Most of today’s pop/rock/rap/whatever music is a crime against humanity, but performers get rarely banned. Except by fascist governments of course.

  54. wolfi says:

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed in Belgrade this June …

  55. Vándorló says:

  56. 2525 says:

We do not want to appear fascist because we do not respect the musical tastes of others. Please remember that Mozart died a pauper and Haydn was no more than a slave to the House of Esterhazy.
Beethoven was not recognized by his peers and Bach
had to please church-goers but still produced masterpieces nevertheless.
I recently traveled back from Budapest on a train filled with “electronic” music fans going to a musicfest at Zamardi. Nice people but they confused bin-lid banging and off-the-shelf synthesized melody lines and a single note thumping bass with music.
They were happy and who are we to complain?
This is a far better occupation than blowing people up in the name of a unknown entity.
Abba were a crime against humanity. But they still have millions of fans.
Playing symphonies by Mahler just for the sake of it is a crime in itself.
I heard a marvelous performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana the other night. It restored my faithco in humanity for the duration of the concert.

and see that he actually referred to Serbia.
Just change Croatia to Serbia in my post
    “Viking at July 15, 2010 7:24 PM”
    and it still stands
The official reason for the denial has not been presented by Paul and I cannot find any real info on it also, but I have not been looking very hard for it, but it is interesting that this debate immediately produces bands like Divizio88

What complete and utter snobs some people can be when it comes to music.
What is so wrong with feeling ‘happy’ when you hear a song? Driving a little faster in your car, because you enjoy a songs beat? How about those songs that throw you back in time, when life was not so complicated?
I remember getting a speeding ticket on the way back from the Dr’s office, the first time I heard the song ” She’s Fresh” from Cool and the Gang. It was for $75 bucks, which was a hell of a lot for a teenager!
To this day, I hear anything from Orleans or Ambrosia…hell that volume gets cranked up!!!
I proudly admit, I enjoy Boney M (still listen to their Christmas Album every year), Bee Gees, love, love, love them, Andy Gibb “Everlasting Love” I adore that song! Don’t even get me going on about Donna Summers, what a beautiful voice.
ABBA being a crime against humanity, give me a break. Imagine, your crime…forcing people to dance to “Waterloo”
    I’ll take that world any-day.
Maybe that’s what Vandor needs…more feeling and less thinking.

Even stone age African tribes can do better than that.
2525 is one of the very few people posting here I can agree with. Great music rarely becomes popular in its own age. There must be some very good musicians today who are forced to make a choice: play what you like and starve or sell out.

@Common Sense: “Great music rarely becomes popular in its own age.” You are one ignorant MF, aren’t you. As is 2525. Haydn, Mozart, Mahler, Bach (which one?), Carl Orff were all famous and highly regarded during their lifetimes. Most of them ridiculously famous and wealthy.
p.s. Enjoying one type of music doesn’t exclude you from enjoying another. Classical, modern, abstract, jazz (not trad.), folk, rap, pop, jpop, ‘ethnic’, roots, blues, hip-hop, even rock… I listen to a lot of stuff. What I don’t listen to is shite like Hungarica and anything similar.
p.p.s Technically Sagopa Kajmer is rap, but better described as hip-hop.
n.b. Just in case you struggle with the difference: All hip-hop is rap, but not all rap is hip-hop.

Ahh finally some one who agree with me
When I opened my restaurant in the end of the 90s here in Budapest, my simple demand on the different Chefs parading by on interviews and test-cooking:
    * Can you do a good steak (given the fact it was impossible to find good meat in Budapest)?
    * Can you make better Pommes Frites than MacDonalds?
    .
In the end we had to settle for some one who could not do anything of those. It was basically impossible to find some one, at that time
Hungarian Chefs just did not understand the importance of potato and how it should be served
No understanding that one of the most important thing is that the fries are hot, dry and not too mushy, instead you just got some fat-dripping bad excuses for fries, tasting from the fish they just fried in the same 3-week old oil

  64. wolfi says:

    I have a better solution:

Just read in a German paper that the Osservatore Romano (the Vatican’s newspaper) apologized to the Beatles that about 45 years ago they called their music hellish, satanic etc – Ringo Starr is supposed to have answered something like “Fuck the Vatican” – to which I might agree …
Maybe that was the reason for the title of one early Rolling Stones album:
    Their Satanc Majesties’ Request
PS: At least the Vatican reacts much faster nowadays. To apologize to Galileo Galilei took them around 400 years …

  66. Vándorló says:

@Viking: Not a big fan of fries, but have you ever tried Heston Blumenthal’s recipe for chips? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCB9jIpNGzY

    Vándorló at July 16, 2010 1:58 PM

No, but I think one Gourmet restaurant in Stockholm did, where I got my best chips ever
In the end of the day we solved the ‘potato-problem’ by introducing a more rough version of chips, which the Chefs still can abuse though
Getting Hungary of all this talk…

  68. Asthe CrowFlies says:

Viking. Frying tonight. The best chips I ever had were at Ostend in Belgium. Excellent beer, as well.
    Many varieties.
It is apparent that you have refused me often enough
free board and lodgings at your diner/dinette.
Perhaps because I have been so rude to you in the past? (JA. Gave your place a good review!?)
Rory Gallagher is our mutual love. So get the chip pan out, line up the cold beers, and crank up the volume on Bullfrog Blues with Rory playing his beaten-up Stratocaster. Now that’s magic.

  69. Bystander says:

“Haydn, Mozart, Mahler, Bach (which one?), Carl
Orff were all famous and highly regarded during
their lifetimes. Most of them ridiculously famous
    and wealthy.”
You beat me to it! And besides, what’s wrong with
Mahler? Is that not good music?
And there’s nothing really wrong with Abba,
Orleans, Donna Summer or anything else if one
happens to be in the mood… any more than one
should be able to eat cupcakes and potato chips
sometimes. Life’s too short to be snobby about
    stuff that makes us happy.
Sure, I may look around and make sure no one hears
Ozzy Osbourne or Paul Mauriat leaking out of my
earphones occasionally… I’m not proud of all my
    tastes…

  70. justasking says:

    @ Viking,
I don’t know if you know this, but McDonald’s sprinkles a mixture of sugar and salt on their fries as well. To me, the addition of sugar, is what completes this side dish. That and they use string fries and not a thicker cut.
    @Wolfi,
Dodolle…what a perfect dish. I like mine crispy/crunchy on the bottom, topped with sauteed onions and sour cream. That, is comfort food.
Have you ever had Eszterhazy Rostelyos, served with zsemlegomboc? That is what I would have as a last meal.
Good God, our taste in Hungarian food is similar…you have no idea how scared that makes me :) )

  71. justasking says:

    @ Bystander,
I love Tony Orlando and Dawn as well as Engelbert Humperdinck :D D
My music collection, 45′s, albums, cassettes, 8 track tapes and CDs, goes from the Andrew Sisters to ZZ Top…and everything in-between.

  72. Bystander says:

Do you still have a functioning 8-track player?!
I used to have boxes of 45′s but I think I lost them
at the same time as all my baseball cards (Hungarian
Baseball League), but I date myself!
Even if I found the 45′s and still had a turntable,
I’d be in big trouble because who in the world still
has one of THESE things sitting around the house? :

  73. Nice,nice, very nice! says:

justasking. Do you eat the food as passionately
as you describe it. A friend asked me to go to a
Macduffs in Budapest. Guess what. I told him to fuck off.
I have been in the establishment only once. I didn’t eat. I just held a balloon whilst my niece (it was her birthday)and her friends made gluttons of themselves munching thin, shriveled chips, and greasy burgers and depositing huge amounts of tomato ketchup to disguise the taste of the food.
My sister couldn’t stop laughing the whole time.
    I couldn’t understand why.
Ambrosia were a fantastic band. The first album was a classic. “Nice, nice, very nice…the Chinese dentist and the British Queen, they all fit together in the same machine.. Nice, nice, very nice.”
Bystander. J.S. Bach. The rest of his family/sons/cousins do not rate on the musical richter scale.
The odd bumpkin like yourself might think otherwise.

  74. justasking says:

    @Bystander,
Yup, I still have the ‘portable radio/8 track player’, (they had just come out) my Father gave me when I was like 7-8. Still works, all 40 lbs of it :) My first 8 track was Helen Ready “I am Woman”.
    @Nice, Nice,
I don’t quite understand what you mean by “eat the food as passionately as I describe it”.
There are no sparks coming off my cutlery, or food in my hair when I eat, if that is what you mean. Nor, do I look like Meg Ryan in “When Harry met Sally”, if I am enjoying my meal.
Regarding your experience in McDonald’s for your niece’s birthday party, I’ll tell you why your sister was laughing. She was laughing because you must have been quite the sight. Sitting there, all stiff backed, holding a balloon with a look of disgust on your face, watching these children enjoying themselves eating the food you deemed garbage. Not being able to get your head around it.
Hell, I laughed when I read your post, for that is how I pictured you. I will say this though, you are quite a sport. Not many people would do what you did for your niece.
Sorry to say, my favourite songs from Ambrosia are “You’re the only Woman”,( I love the bass in that song, mind you, I love the bass period), “Biggest Part of Me” and “How much I feel”.
I enjoy hearing a unique voice, Nora Jones, Huey Lewis, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire (fantastic band), David Pack of Ambrosia (beautiful voice) Michael McDonald of the Doobs, Steve Miller (He’s got a new album out called ‘Bingo’) and Boz Scaggs.
All this talk of music today on Politics had me on u-tube watching videos from various artists of the 70’s and 80’s. I just sat there in the den, with the speakers cranked.

  75. Nice, very nice! says:

justasking. I recognize the music which “turns you on”. It is good stuff and certainly appeals to both sexes. I’m glad you didn’t include Abba, begorra!
Otherwise that would have been my Waterloo!
You are one of the very few posters on this site that I like and your contributions are always interesting. Common Sense is another whom I like for the same reason.
Ethnic Croats having a voice in the Hungarian parliament? OK. How about the rest of us?
Earth Wind and Fire are doing a concert with Chick
Corea in Veszprém end of the month.
    take care.

  76. justasking says:

    @Nice,
You really do know shit about women don’t you?
In regards to the recognition of music that may “turn me on.” Fool. It’s not the music; it’s the “feeling… the desire of wanting to be wanted. How hard is that to understand?
I too enjoy Common’s post, when he does not go south on me and thinks that money can buy things such as class. That’s innate. Ya either have it or ya don’t. There are some things that money cannot buy.
Regarding ethnic Croats having a voice in Parliament, what about them? We all have one. It’s just that the squeaky wheel gets that grease.
Regarding Earth, Wind and Fire…I’d give my left nut, if I had one, to attend.
Go, take pictures and send them to me!

  77. Mr Grumpy says:

justasking. You’re too dangerous. I’m outta here!
Little wonder Viking remained silent about your visit??
And, I do know about women. That’s why I never was foolish enough to marry one. The divorce statistics have proved me right.
I do not take a back eat in the aggressive stakes either. I’m not “Mr Nice Guy contrary to the Ambrosia lyrics.
Drink less coffee is good advice. Take it.
Have a nice “feeling”. Sorry “day”!

  78. justasking says:

    @Mr Grumpy,
As I sit here, drinking a cup of coffee, I can not help but wonder about a couple three things.
    1) Have you considered marrying a man to avoid divorce courts?
2)Why would you think that Viking would post anything regarding our dinner in June? As for him being silent, he ain’t to me.
3)How many names do you write under and why? Do you have an issue committing to one name? :) )

  79. Bachelor Bastard says:

Just pierce the surface and the true beast will always appear.
Writing under different names on this site is advisable. Tell you sometime!
Marry a man? Leave that one to Vándorló.
Enjoy your coffee and your “feelings”.
Glad to hear Viking is incommunicado. I have a soft spot for him. But I still wouldn’t marry him.

  80. Marriage Counselor says:

A woman, a dog, and a walnut tree,
the more you beat them the better they be.

  81. wolfi says:

    @ Marriage Counselor:
Terribly wrong on three counts – I wonder what kind of life you have …
PS: Do you know the meaning of the word “friend” ?
    Probably not …

  82. Vándorló says:

@justasking: ‘Bachelor Bastard’ is stuck out in Pákozd. He spent most of his life as a teacher, but spends his time here variously claiming he is some kind of entrepreneur helping Hungarian businesses, and then telling everyone else what they should be talking about without offering one sensible or intelligent word or observation himself. He also claimed that the last Hungarian in his family died 80 years ago. So basically, he is another lazy twat living out his retirement, telling other people how they should live their lives, because his was and is shite. Ask his about Soros, you two may have more in common that he’s letting on under his current medication.

  83. Marriage Counselor says:

    wolfi
So you have never heard the old adage from Thomas Fuller about the proper handling of women, dogs and walnut trees? Sad.

  84. justasking says:

    @Vandor,
Why do you always feel the need to talk down to me? … It does old after awhile truth be told.
If you want to give me a heads up, can’t you just say “Hey Zsuzsa, blah, blah, blah…?
As for what posters claim to be or not, I’m not that simple, (although I know you would disagree) I have enough ware-with-all to wade through the bullshit and figure things out for myself.
Christ, would you give me at least a little credit? Please, don’t answer that, I can only imagine what you would really like to say.
Regarding Soros, I have my preconceived notions. You want to provide a different twist? I’ll listen.
You have something to say to me personally? Say it for God’s sake.

  85. wolfi says:

    @ Marriage Counselor :
It seems that many posters here (like you ?) still live in the 16th (or 17th ?) century like this “(in)famous” Mr Fuller – don’t you realize that “The times they are’a changing” ?
You don’t know what you’re missing – life is so much better in the 21st century where you can ignore and even laugh about concepts like male supremacy, religion, nation, Trianon etc …
Sometimes I feel almost sorry for those patr-idiots here, but then I think: serves them right …
Today we’re going to dog school to have our dog trined – not by beating it but with tenderness.
We don’t want it to become a Hungarian falu kutya …
BTW: The dog school (actually it’s a “Verein” or club awhere we are members) also has a nice little bar and grill – and the weather looks promising

  86. Vándorló says:

@justasking: Apologies, you didn’t deserve that. I’ll try to grow up – at least occasionally.
@Marriage Counselor: The Thomas Fuller quote follows the pattern of common Irish proverbs, written as a trinity (e.g. ‘Three things come without asking: fear, jealousy, and love.’). Though I’d say this one is closer to the truth “Is folamh fuar é teach gan bean.”

  87. wolfi says:

    @Vándorló:
That Irish proverb “trifft den Nagel auf den Kopf” …
    Have a nice sunday (everybody)!

  88. justasking says:

    @ Vandor,
    Thank-you.

  89. DioFa says:

In the provinces everybody keeps a dog. The canine chant can be heard at every passing stranger. Especially gypsies.
Some women, like men, deserve a good kicking every now and then.
Fuller was a cleric. Appears to have been a chauvinist and racist and an annoying bastard just like me.
It would do no good to beat my walnut tree because it’s had it. I should chop it down but I haven’t the heart. Several blackbirds (rigó) nest in it and I love the fekete madár.
Unlike galamb/pigeon which wakes me up early every morning with its horrible croaking.
They tend to shit everywhere. Occasionally on your head if you are not careful. Time for …bed!

  90. olga says:

    @ justasking
I am not sure if you have seen my posting that I like my ducks in a row. They are lining up again.
I could never figure out why you liked a certain
odious person on this website. After reading your taste in music, it’s all clear now. You have bad taste. (Mine is amazing of course)
About Croatians – My husband’s best friend was Croatian from Istria and his first language was Italian. I never heard him say a bad word about any race, religion or nationality except for Serbs. Won’t repeat the words but it but was “not kind” – it seems that hating your neighbours in Europe is a sport
I mentioned that to my girl-friend who is from Paris – she said the Parisians were different. They don’t just hate different nationalities, they look down on and dislike everyone who is not from Paris. Having grown up in Canada, she was told she sounds like someone from Quebec – the ultimate insult.

  91. justasking says:

    @Olga,
Ha, Ha, Ha! Bad taste in music… I do not.
I will let you in on a little secret…one, that even my husband does not know…are ya ready?
I like Polka music and I especially love dancing to it. I know!
It brings back these happy memories of when I was growing up and attending the monthly dinner dances held at the Magyar Haz with my folks. Waltzes, swings, rumba, my God, you name it and I danced it. Still do. Now a days when we do go to the Magyar Haz, my dance partners all tend to be 65 and up, for they are the only ones who know how to dance that way anymore.
Speaking of Croatian friends, I remember going to elementary and Jr High School with a Croatia kid named Ivan. I forgot all about him until your post.
Regarding the Serbs, I have yet to hear anybody say something nice about them :(

  92. Common Sense says:

    justasking
Polka? It’s almost as horribly annoying as gypsy music or “magyar nóta”. You must be 90 years old with a drinking problem.
And dancing in public should be prohibited.
Wait, there’s worse. I went to the “Grand Opening” of a Mexican restaurant in Goshen, NY.
I was eating my dinner in peace and quiet, when the Mariachi Band showed up, with trumpets and all, and started playing about two feet from my table. I’m still having flashbacks…
Music is what you can enjoy in a concert hall or at home, in your comfy chair, headphones on, eyes closed. That’s music. The rest is noise pollution.
    Now you know.

  93. Mr Nasty says:

Olga. There you go again with your self-opinionated rubbish.
If justasking likes a certain “odious” person on this site it must be you?
I like common sense and just asking because they have a human side and both are humorous.
Not programmed humorless dipsticks that swarm over this place like ravenous locust.
One day you will be fortunate enough for a rogue pigeon to shit on your head from a great height and knock some sense in to that thick skull of yours. (Ding dong merrily on high, in heaven the bells are ringing.)
    I change me names
    to avoid foul games
    and I prefer good taste
    to cut and paste.
Help. They’re here…the white coats again!
BTW. Common Sense. It was endearing to hear JA. speak about her memories and the polka and all that.
You should step on to the dance floor sometime and let it all hang out. It will do you good.
PS. I have a certain “stare” that deters mariachi bands and the like.

  94. Cináed says:

Call for tenders: Outsourcing of the National Government of the Republic of Hungary.
Hungary is unable to govern itself due to endemic stupidity and incompetence. Tenders are called therefore, for countries with a track record of fiscal success and bureacratic competence. While a seamless transition to subtle outside oversight is preferable, benign dictatorship or military occupation will be considered on a case by case basis.

  95. olga says:

    @ justasking
The Polka? Oh NO! Does this mean you like the accordion? Tell me it ain’t so.
Someone gave me a Hungarian Operetta CD – it’s not my kind of music but I played it a lot when I first got it and missed Hungary – it pissed me off that Kolozsvar is no longer in Hungary (I think Szep Varos Kolozsvar from Marica Grofno) – it was the one of the songs I really liked.
There is a song I heard in BP – not sure who wrote it but it’s called “Ven cigany” – I downloaded it from the Internet and it’s on a one of my home made CDs
If you picked up any good gypsy music CDs from
Hungary a few weeks ago, let me know.
Back to Croatia – they must be raking in those tourist dollars – the new riviera from what I hear.

  96. Law says:

Shit this is not a friggen dancing and music forum, go onto some Freddie Astaire or Geno Kelly site.

  97. Vándorló says:

@Olga and Justasking: The best place for old Hungarian recordings is http://gramofon.nava.hu/ A brilliant site and someone has put a lot of work into all of it.

  98. olga says:

    @ Vandorlo
    Thanks for that website
I am trying to figure out justasking’s address so I can report her to the Child Welfare authorities in case she exposes her young children to polka music.

  99. Cináed says:

yeah ogre, what do you think this is? Stop posting about culturally relevant things like music so we can get back to the true purpose of this site: finding excuses why Hungary should wallow in its collective desire to remain a pariah of the international community. If you’re not sure about the parameters of appropriate posting, you should include such things as conspiracies, shifting blame, mindless insults, and ridiculous social, economic and political theories…oh, and it’s ok to include bizarre metaphysical rants because we all know that the centre of the universe is actually in a secret underground office underneath Balaton.

  100. justasking says:

    @Common,
I love Gypsy music! One of my favourite songs is “Hey Rigo, Rigo! Have you ever heard the song “Hol a Hatos Megal?” I can only imagine how many miles I danced to both of those songs.
And another little known ditty about me, I used to dance Magyar Napi Tanc. Yup, singing all those ‘Magyar Nota’ and dancing in slippers the whole nine yards. We used to get our costumes directly from Hungary. I’ve got some pictures if you want to see them 
Mariachi Bands…again, love them. I would kill to have any kind of musical talent. Even my 5 year old will say to me…”Mommy you can’t sing”, where I then explain to her that I can…just not very well.
I agree there is some music that you should only be able to sit back with closed eyes to truly appreciate. And then, there are other types of music, where it is plain criminal not to feel it and react to it by dancing.
Oh and nope, not 90, early 40’s. Have ya ever heard of that song by Cselenji Joszef ‘Hosszu az en Kutyam Farka’?
    @Olga,
I do like the accordion and there is an annual Accordion Festival in Kimberly, BC. From what I hear, they attract players from around the world. A couple of years ago, whilst in that area I stumbled across it and have every intension of attending…as soon as I find somebody to go with me.
I have must do’s when I go to Hungary: 1) collect traditional dressed Hungarian porcelain figurines from companies like Holo Haz etc, 2) I collect CD’s, on both modern and traditional Gypsy music. This year I bought Rozsa Ignac, Emillio, Lagzi Lajcsi and Bodi Guszti es a Fekete szemek. 3) Catch any Magyar Napi Tanc performances. Regarding my children, yup they are being exposed!
    @Vandor,
I appreciate you posting that link. If you know of or stumble across any other sites that cover old Hungarian anything, I would love to know about them.
    @Mr. Nasty,
You may want to see Common ‘all hang out’, but I sure don’t!

  101. olga says:

    @ Cinaed
Jaj!! You became a Hungarian in China and all it took was a passport screw up
I always thought I was in your “club” with CG and FL as far as lacking a bad temper. Want you to know you lost your membership until further notice.
I am stuck at home on the computer most of the day but will try to call the Hungarian office ( it was not an Embassy) where I got my passport and ask what someone needs to do in Canada to renew a Hungarian passport. I just wonder if it’s the same rules here as in China – will post the answer here as opposed to emailing you, in case someone else needs to know the answer.
Now get back to your usual WASP personality (Vandorlo has a bad temper too – must be Irish)

  102. Cináed says:

olga: I doubt I could ever become a Hungarian. You see, I have this unquenchable desire to do something with my life.

  103. olga says:

    @ Cinaed
The Toronto “Consulate” seems to be out of business – called Ottawa 613-230-8215
    Website:http://www.mfa.gov.hu/kulkepviselet/CA/en/mainpage.htm
Spoke to a woman named Maria – she said you have to go back to Hungary to renew a passport but what people do is get a new “one year” Hungarian passport in foreign countries and that’s available to Hungarians all over the world.
As soon as she said that, bells went off. When my son was working his way through Australia his passport had 4 months to go and he and his friends wanted to go to Bali and they needed “one year to go before expiry date” passports. He had to go to Sydney from Fraser island (no idea of the distance) and had to get a new 1 year passport and then had to get the regular 5 year passport upon returning to Canada. So maybe Hungary is not that different after all.

  104. Mr Very Nasty. says:

Justasking. Thanks for letting us have your life story via music. When is the book due and, surely a film follow-up: “The tills were alive to the sound
    of cash.”
BTW. I didn’t say I wanted to see anything hanging from C.Sense. I wanted him to lighten up by taking off his cloak and dancing the polka with you. After all, you did say your partners were usually 65-year-old has-beens with toothless grins and a penchant for farting indiscriminately.
Cináed. Welcome to the “frustration” club. You now see how Hungarian business doesn’t work.
My office is at the bottom of Lake Balaton. Call me on: S O S 911 MAYDAY.

  105. justasking says:

    @Cin,
    Wow, that was pretty harsh.
    @Mr Poopie Bum,
Hardly my life story, just a small snippet of it.
As for Olga, you want to attack somebody…take me on. You’re usually harmless and funny slams are slowly becoming uncalled for.

  106. olga says:

    @ justasking
Printed you posting and will check out all the songs starting with “Hosszu az en Kutyam Farka”
I am also listening to Hungarian music while I am supposedly working – NOT
Sorry I am busy and can’t go to the accordion festival in BC but will meet you in Hungary to listen to gypsy music any day
BTW, I am sorry for bringing up that Luna Mezzo Mare song again but one of the things I liked about the video was that everyone was so HAPPY and the accordion player looked like he really didn’t want to be there and wished he were at the Magyar Haz watching you dance the polka with the 65+ crowd. Take a look at his face in the first 30 seconds of the video – cheers up later.
As a Mother – I beg you to reconsider exposing your children to polka music.

  107. Cináed says:

Zsuzsa: Hi…sorry if I offended you. I’m just having one of those periods where it just seems like all you hear are excuses, excuses, excuses and blame, blame, blame. I know I need to reign in my ‘passion’ on this, but then, given the trendy anti-PC movement, I figure I’m just getting into the spirit.
    -
You’re right though, there are Hungarians out there who are trying to get ahead and achieve something meaningful. I just wish they had more power within their own country.

  108. justasking says:

    @Cin,
You didn’t offend me, you startled me…that’s all.

  109. Cináed says:

olga…by the way…did I ever tell you my Mum’s family is Irish and my Dad’s family is Scottish? Perhaps you’re not far wrong with the temper thing.

  110. Cináed says:

Zsuzsa: well in that case, I’ll get back to my venting. …I’ll just remember to send up a warning flag for you next time.

  111. Grrrrrrrr says:

justasking. You are just another big mouth broad
that appears to have a higher opinion of herself which the rest of us do not share.
As for “taking you on”. No thanks. I will leave that to the other lightweights.
I have had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at you via your life story these past couple of days. I am happy to say that you are thousands of miles away behind a computer screen claiming to sound tough but ultimately you are just simply a querulous tic on the skin of humanity.
    But,if that makes you happy – I won’t complain.
Once again, enjoy your coffee, and those oh so tender “feelings” that you will hopefully share one day with the rest of us mere mortals.

  112. justasking says:

I wanted to make friends with justasking but even she despises me.
I remember a description of what you (Bystander) thought ja looked like – I was impressed.

  117. Bystander says:

Rather than turn queer, I’d say just avoid the wry
insults or other versions of the “pulling
    pigtails”/”snapping training bra” that probably
used to work really well in grade-school…
I enjoy your quirky, almost random sense of humor
and odd changes of subject — I think women are
always on the lookout for dangerous psychos so
perhaps toning down those might keep some of the
more skittish on the “line” longer giving you a
    chance to charm em!
And if that doesn’t work, holding their head
underwater for about 30 seconds should do the
    trick!
And my last recommendation would be to never, ever
ask their clarification on the propagation of
sound waves relative to any simple numerical
