Fidesz in August maintained overwhelming support ahead of its rivals just over a month before the October local elections, Nepszabadsag daily said on Wednesday, quoting Szonda Ipsos poll.
Support for the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance among all voters, at 35 percent, was three times higher than backing for the main opposition Socialists, Szonda Ipsos said.
Radical nationalist Jobbik received 8 percent, while the new green Politics Can Be Different (LMP) only 3 percent, falling short on the 5 percent parliamentary threshold.
Backing among decided voters remained unchanged for the two main parties: 61 percent for Fidesz and 18 for the Socialists. In this group Jobbik increased support with one percentage point to 15 percent, while LMP stood at 4 percent.
With only a month away from the local elections Fidesz’s lead ahead of the Socialists is six times higher in the villages (43:7 percent), and two-fold in smaller cities and towns (27:13). Jobbik at the same time is still stronger in small towns and villages with support of 10 percent ahead of 7 percent for the Socialist party.
In Budapest the Socialists have a much stronger showing with an 18 percent support, compared with Fidesz’s 28 percent. Here LMP has 5 percent.
The poll was conducted with a sample of 1,500 voting-age adults between August 10-17.
