EP liberal group to hold open hearing on Hungarian media law in Brussels

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group (ALDE) of the European Parliament will hold an open hearing entitled “Freedom of Press in Hungary” in Brussels on Tuesday.

ALDE has called the event in the EP’s headquarters “in view of the recent adoption by the Hungarian goverNment of a law on the press which clearly poses serious problems concerning the liberty of the press,” the invitation ALDE released to MTI on Monday said.

The session will be opened by ALDE’s president, Guy Verhofstadt, the former prime minister of Belgium.

Those to attend include EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes, former OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Miklos Haraszti and Hungary’s former Parliamentary Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Laszlo Majtenyi.

The hearing will include a video message by Hungarian novelist Gyorgy Konrad.

MEPs representing Hungary have also indicated to attend.

ALDE is the third largestpolitical group in the European Parliament.
