Daily turns to top court over media law

Hungary’s largest-circulation national daily, Nepszabadsag, has turned to the Constitutional Court over the new media package, the paper said on Wednesday.

Editor-in-Chief Karoly T Voros submitted complaints that the legislation curbed press freedom and freedom of opinion in 16 areas, the paper said.

Among the complains listed, were the new media authority’s supervision over print media, powers to impose fines, regulatory powers over new media, and the requirement that reporting must be balanced in the printed media.

The left-leaning paper decided to turn to the Constitutional Court early in December, before the final vote in parliament on the new media law which took place on December 21.

Would this be unbalanced reporting? After all, it says only that the law is unfair but it does not say that Fidesz itself is above criticism.
