Hungary extends Afghan mission mandate

The government has extended the mandate of the Hungarian Army’s contingent serving in Afghanistan, the Defence Ministry told MTI on Thursday.

The mandate of the Hungarian provincial reconstruction team (PRT) has been extended to October 1, 2011. The Hungarian team has contributed to reconstruction efforts in Puli Khumri in the Baghlan Province of northern Afghanistan since 2006, the ministry said.

In keeping with the NATO’s current goals, the Hungarian Army has recently given priority to training and mentoring in its offers to the alliance. The main targets of the PRT are training and preparing the Afghan army in order to enable the Afghan government to take over tasks to maintain safety in the country, the statement said.

The mandate of the Air Mentor Team, involved in training Afghan air forces, has been extended until May 1, 2012. The mandate of the American-Hungarian Operational Mentor Liaison Team (OMLT) has been extended by one year, until August 31, 2012.

The government policy on Afghanistan has remained unchanged, the statement said.

Good one for April 1st. Hungarian soldiers, who have never seen battle, teaching Afghan rebels how to fight. These guys are born with AK-47s in hand, they defeated the Russkies, they shoot more bullets on a wedding day than the entire Hungarian army in a year, what the hell can they learn from us? Really?
