Protesters ask state president not to sign constitution

About 200 people demonstrated near the president’s Sandor Palace on Thursday, calling on Pal Schmitt not to sign the imminent new constitution.

The demonstration was organised by the “one million for Hungarian press freedom” Facebook group, which has staged several demonstrations in connection with the constitution and the Media Act.

Speakers called the new constitution a “one-party ultimatum” which cements the government’s power. They called on Schmitt, who is currently on an official visit in Prague, to “make a wise decision” and not sign the constitution.

Parliament approved the new supreme law with 262 votes in support, 44 votes against and one abstention on April 18. Schmitt is expected to sign it on April 25 and it is planned to come into effect on January 1, 2012.
