Hungary’s ombudsman for civic and human rights has rated Hungary’s ombudsman system as the weakest among the Visegrad Four countries of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Mate Szabo told MTI after a meeting of ombudsmen from the four countries in Budapest on Tuesday, that he would give Hungary one out of four stars for the way its ombudsmen operate.
“It is only next year that Hungary’s new constitution will create a unified system for ombudsman representation, while such a system is already in place in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia,” he said.
Szabo gave Poland four stars, and the latter three and two stars, respectively, adding he hoped Hungary’s system would be brought to a par with Slovakia’s.
The four ombudsmen agreed to meet in the Czech Republic next year, where they will assess the parliamentary reporting of ombudsmen, Szabo said.
