Brussels summit to cap Hungary’s EU presidency

At the summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels on June 23-24 decisions are expected to be made on issues such as Croatia’s EU accession, a European Roma framework strategy and the Danube Strategy, which have been main priority areas for Hungary’s EU presidency ending on June 30.

The two-day summit will also close the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian presidency, the first of the trio-presidencies launched under the EU Lisbon Treaty in 2010.

In light of the financial and economic crisis, including the situation in Greece, economic issues will be high on the agenda.

The summit will be of especially important for Hungary, with appreciation expected to be given for the major progress made on two major reforms – response measures to the economic crisis and coordinating the bloc’s of economic governance.

The two-day summit’s schedule also includes a discussion of immigration issues with a focus of the effect of the refugee inflow from north Africa on Europe and its Schengen border system.
