Hungary recognises rebel council as legitimate representative of Libya

The Hungarian government recognises the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) as the legitimate representative of Libya, the Foreign Ministry told MTI on Tuesday.

The ministry welcomed the NTC taking “control over Libya and creating the opportunity for transformation”.

Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi met the NTC’s foreign affairs representative during a visit to Egypt in March, before sending an envoy to the rebels’ headquarters in Benghazi to act as a liaison with the NTC leadership, the ministry noted.

The NTC’s victory, it added, would create a chance to lay the foundations for the rule of law.

“Hungary supports the council’s efforts to stabilise Libya’s internal situation and hopes that the NTC would restore order and security in the spirit of legality, and make all the required steps towards consolidation and reconstruction,” the ministry’s statement said.

The ministry called it an outstanding diplomatic success that the staff of Hungary’s Tripoli embassy had “stood their ground in representing during the civil-war situation the interests of the European Union, the United States, Greece, Croatia, Canada and Italy, too.”
