Hungarian President starts four-day visit to Turkey

Hungary’s relations with Turkey are problem-free and aimed at strengthening cooperation based on strategic partnership, President Pal Schmitt said after meeting his Turkish counterpart at the start of a four-day official visit to Turkey on Tuesday.

Schmitt told MTI over the phone that he and Abdullah Gul had established that bilateral trade between their countries exceeded 1.5 billion dollars annually and was still growing. Turkish investors have spent over one billion dollars in Hungary so far, he added.

Schmitt said Hungary acknowledged that Turkey supported security and stability in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.

He said Hungary supported Turkey’s bid to join the European Union unreservedly and consistently and would offer its political and practical assistance towards Turkey’s preparations.

The two presidents discussed the security of Europe’s energy supply. Schmitt told MTI that Turkey had expressed interest in building the Nabucco gas pipeline, which would provide an alternative to the existing networks and raise the security of energy supply in Europe.

Schmitt met Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, and conveyed an invitation, from Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban, to Budapest in the first half of 2012.

Schmitt said he had expressed at talks that Hungary had a vested interest in expanding Turkish-Hungarian trade and economic relations and in attracting Turkish investment to Hungary.

He said Hungary was committed to the Nabucco gas pipeline project, and Schmitt welcomed the Azeri-Turkish agreement on natural gas transport signed in October, which is an important step in bringing gas from the Caspian sea to Europe.

Schmitt told Erdogan that Hungary supported Turkey’s EU membership aspirations. He said that it was in both Hungary and Europe’s interest that a strong, modern and democratic Turkey should become a full-fledged member of the bloc.

Schmitt visited the grave of Kemal Ataturk during the day and paid a visit to the University of Ankara’s humanities faculty. He met Cemil Cicek, the Speaker of Turkish Parliament, and discussed the “good cooperation” between their parliaments.

He really doesn’t understand the real face of Turkey

Some people like to call the Chinese being ‘The Turks of Asia’
I think we will learn to know ‘The Anatolian Tiger’ real better soon, like in how to caress it and pad it, but this time it maybe will come without a French invitation?
