Hungary’s name will officially change from the “Republic of Hungary” to simply “Hungary” (Magyar Köztársaság to Magyarország) on January 1st, and consequently the government has been planning to change the country’s name in laws as well as preparing to change signs on the border. In order to change the “Republic of Hungary” to just “Hungary” in previously passed legislation, the government has proposed a bill, which was supposed to have been discussed last Friday, but has been delayed until this week.
Apparently there was not as much fuss in 1989 when the “Peoples’ Republic of Hungary” became the “Republic of Hungary.” Instead, people were simply told to ignore the “peoples’” part of the name in official paperwork, so that such documents occasionally still appear, although whenever a law was modified the then new name of “Republic of Hungary” was inserted.
Additionally, Hungary’s name change will necessitate the replacement of seventy-three signs on the border, which is estimated to cost Ft 5.5 million (€18,000).

The Kingdom of Hungary would be much more appropriate
Agreed.
Wouldn’t a kingdom need a king?
Agreed.
No, not at all. The Holy Crown of Hungary has been a legal person since the early ages. The human monarch himself was a subject to the Holy Crown .

As usual the Orwelian New Speak
The last Habsburg king of Hungary, Charles IV, tried and failed to retain the throne in 1921 – Hungary remained a kingdom without a king until 1946.
In such times the Virgin Mary would be considered a formal monarch of Hungary, but this venue was not pursued due to regent Horthy’s Protestant faith. Instead the favored idea was Szent Korona Állameszmény, which assigned legal personhood to the Holy Crown and declared that all state powers of the monarch or the government stem solely from the sacred powers of the headgear
A monarch or a regent was formally seen as a mere arm for the crown. The concept was used to push Hungary toward a rightist regime intent on re-securing the Lands of Saint Stephen, a course which ultimately tied the country to Hitler’s Third Reich and ended in severe World War II destruction
Or in plain English – Horthy was a Dictator and Regent Horthy’s Hungary was a Dictatorship
Horthy was a defender of the Hungarian nation, you might call it a dictatorship but it was a legitimate “dictatorship”. You have to keep in mind the times in which in came. Don’t forget that it was the Entente (Britain, France, America) powers that gave their support to Horthy to overthrow the Bolshevik regime of Kun Bela. If you don’t like this period, then you can blame the champions of freedom and democracy, the Entente!
@Gandi:
I suggest you shouldn’t bother about seriously addressing the garbage the Swedish moron spews. Falra hányt borsó (like water off a duck’s back)

Like we today blame the current “champions of freedom and democracy” when the support local Dictators for oil, diamonds or political influence
Who supported Saddam and made his war against the Iranians, that costed over a million Muslims deaths?
Who supported the apartheid regime in South Africa, for so many years?
It is power politics, plaid for the good of a higher goal
But you are a citizen of that country, paying taxes and have to watch your face in the mirror every morning, so the question is more to ask you:
* How can you stand it?
@Sophist:
Even though there are some legal and conceptual similarities between the concept of the British Crown (as a corporate person) and the Hungarian Holy Crown (as a legal person) but the difference is substantial. The very existence of the British monarchy is tied to living humans, the Doctrine of the Holy Crown doesn’t assume a human monarch.
Holy Crown-dom of Hungary
Very funny. Ha-ha.
When Hungary was a kingdom it had a king
When it became part of an Empire it was ruled by an emperor
Now it’s becoming a country it has Orbán
Great.
Down with the Republic of Hungary! Long live the Kingdom of Hungary! (No need for a human king though, that is Horthy’s solution was almost perfect and that state of affairs should be finalized constitutionally)

“The Kingdom of Hungary” (Magyar Királyság) from 1920 to 1946 was a Dictatorship and the Dictator was Regent Miklós Horthy
No wonder ‘leto’ want the Hungarian Dictatorship back, but now under Regent Orban
I think the new name should be Disney Orszag.
@ I love Hungary,
“I think the new name should be Disney Orszag”
This, from an individual who goes by the handle…’I love Hungary’ and not ‘I love the Republic of Hungary’
Besides, it’ll keep a few guys busy for awhile printing and replacing these signs…job creation! What more do you all want?
“Magyar Banánköztársaság” would be more accurate.
@Andy,
Yeah…maybe they could look towards Slovakia for advise on that?
@Just Asking. I see I have here another person “Andy” name. I did not write above comment, but anyway, was funny.. My hungarian language skills are not in such condition.
@Andy the real one,
Sorry about that, I did think it was you.
As for finding it funny…piss off!
I still prefer it over “Magyar Bankköztársaság”, as it was and would be under any other government. Choose your evil.
Orbánisztán has a nice ring to it.
I prefer the shorter and more elegant “Orbánia”
“Hungary’s name will officially change from the Republic of Hungary to simply Hungary (Magyar Köztársaság to Magyarország”
Why?
Was this change also something that was part of the Magyarization-movement from 1830 and forward – to want to change the name from “Kingdom of Hungary”, which still could be viewed as a polyethnic Kingdom=Society, to the much stricter Magyar-only “Hungary” (Magyarorszag)?
@Viking,
“to the much stricter Magyar-only “Hungary” (Magyarorszag)?”
Yeah, you might be onto something here.
I wonder if that’s what Italy meant…a stricter Italian only ‘Italia’, or France, a stricter French-only ‘France’, or Germany (you know those Germans…give them an inch) a stricter German-only ‘Deutschland’.
Justwhining you’ll never get it – for example the German state is called (or calls itself):
Bundesrepublik Deutschland aka
Federal Republic of Germany …
So what might be the reason for letting go the “Republic” of Hungary ? Think about that instead of just whing …
@Wolfpup,
I know that,did you miss the “(you know those Germans…give them an inch)” part…meaning their obsession with who was a true German?
@Wolfpup,
“So what might be the reason for letting go the “Republic” of Hungary ?”
Sorry, missed that part of your post.
By keeping the title Republic, you are not acknowledging the Holy crown. Republics are for countries who don’t have a monarchy…Hungary does….moron

I think I (and 10 million of my neighbours) missed that fact that Hungary is a “monarchy”?
Neither the current, nor the new Hungarian Constitution will state that Hungary is a Kingdom or a Monarchy
At least what I have heard, but who knows at the speed of changing laws in this, *still*, Republic
@Viking,
This is why they are doing away with the word ‘republic’, one more thing that will remove anything communist…enjoy the read!
“Communism was wholly opposed to monarchy, and became an important element of many republican movements during the 20th century. The Russian Revolution spread ensuring that the states were reestablished as socialist republics rather than monarchies”

Well, *that* ‘scholar’ has never heard about The Liberal Revolution, of which the US and Canada are typical creations of
It started with the French Revolution, which is described as:
“Old ideas about tradition and hierarchy – of monarchy, aristocracy and religious authority – were abruptly overthrown by new Enlightenment principles of equality, citizenship and inalienable rights”
And that is why Hungary should crawl back to being a “Kingdom”, reverting the ideals from the Hungarian Uprising 1848

* Italy
officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana[
* France
The French Republic (French: République française, commonly known as France
So, Hungary is doing it again under Fidesz, going against the main stream in Europe
FYI, it is not Sweden, it is officially the Kingdom of Sweden (Swedish: Konungariket Sverige), then we imported Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, when we could not find any clever/stupid enough to be the King of Sweden (and Norway – it was a package-deal)
We speak about the *official* name, not what people call the different countries. The official names normally reflect the type of governance and only real Kingdom have that addition
@Viking,
“The official names normally reflect the type of governance and only real Kingdom have that addition”
So, your saying that Hungary should just ignore the Holy Crown…it means nothing?

It is being ignored today, so?
If Hungary would go from a Republic (with or without the word “Republic” in the official name) to a “Kingdom”, it would be one of the 1st since how many centuries to do that reversal?
Not that would surprise so many, though…
But it is a fair assumption it would be just another reason to ignore Hungary on the International scene, as being an obscure country
The old and new constitution does not mention that Hungary is a Kingdom, so how can it be it?
Not even the MKAB (Hungarian Constitutional Court) has the new constitution in English on its web-site, still only the old one, but I remember the following:
“Article B
(2) The form of government of Hungary shall be that of a republic”
So, even the new Constitution claims Hungary is a Republic
It just that the official name changed from (in English”
* The Republic of Hungary
to
* Hungary
Is Hungary presented as a Kingdom nowadays in Canada?
@Viking,
“If Hungary would go from a Republic (with or without the word “Republic” in the official name) to a “Kingdom”, it would be one of the 1st since how many centuries to do that reversal?”
Are you on crack? Where did you read that I want Hungary to include the title of ‘Kingdom’? I just want the word ‘Republic’ to disappear.

Not unless you ‘presented’ Hungary as the ‘Kingdom of Hungary’ no.

OK, but you gave me the impression, that by dropping the word “Republic”, Hungary became a “Kingdom”
It does not, then even The New Constitution defines Hungary as a “Republic”
Hungary is less a “Kingdom” or a “Monarchy” than Canada is, then Canada is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth as just that
So that is what you can feed your Royal feelings with, while we live on in the Hungarian Republic, soon to be known only as “Hungary”
Think of it, you and ‘leto’ share the same Monarch
@Viking,
“Think of it, you and ‘leto’ share the same Monarch”
I know that. Canada is actually quite supportive and proud of our Monarchy. That’s why the Royal Family always comes to Canada for a visit…everybody likes Canada
and what about “jamahiriya”?
Királyság erős paprika
@Vidra; yep, then it would be a Viktátorship(?)
So, which member of the government owns the sign making company contracted to produce the new signs?
How about just calling the country “Stop!”… There are plenty of those signs already printed.
Ft 5.5 million on changing border signs. Plus further money on changing official paperwork, coins, passports, driving licenses, etc. etc. Someone just give these guys a rock to live on (maybe Bouvet island) and they can play at running a country there as much as they want, where they can do no more harm.
@ justasking says:
“So, your saying that Hungary should just ignore the Holy Crown…it means nothing?”
What on earth are you talking about? The ‘Holy Crown’ is already on the flag, the coins, official emblems. What’s the point of changing the name of the country? Especially as the country is actually a republic with a presidential system, not a monarchy with a ‘Holy’ monarch.
“What’s the point of changing the name of the country? ”
See above.
@Bowen,
“The ‘Holy Crown’ is already on the flag, the coins, official emblems”
Well, if one was to use you argument of it being on everything else, why stop there? What’s one more thing…the countries name?
——–
“Especially as the country is actually a republic with a presidential system, not a monarchy with a ‘Holy’ monarch”
Then, what’s the Crown all about? And why is it on “the flag, the coins, and official emblems”?

Call a fool an idiot. Same difference, perhaps?
Can we proclaim or name the eastern part of Hungary (the equivalent of Siberia in Russia)Viktoria? Orbanpuszta?
And then exile the demented leader to that place with a cardboard crown;leave him to play among the sheep and cows whilst making plans to bring the rest of the world under his control.
Something along the megalomaniac lines of Hitler without the war machine to back it up?
Nice foaming at the mouth…
I hope you’re actually imbued with the insane hatred these lines convey. (Because hatred is said to be detrimental to one’s health.)
@: Leto
There is no hatred in the above statement. Maybe Orban would be very very happy playing with the sheep and the cows with his holy crown, in a specially sectioned-off area, with no nasty people telling him what he should or shouldn’t do. He could even wear his holy crown if he wants. Anything he likes. Lovely. Brings a warm glow to my heart. Hope it happens. Maybe you could go and play with him sometimes (although he might insist that he wears the crown, and you can only admire it).
“There is no hatred in the above statement”
Oh, sure thing, there is none at all.
Glad you agree! Together, we can make the world a better place.
I’m sure Orbánpuszta, part of the world, will be a better place. So let’s make it together.

WoW, there could exist a better place than Hungary under The Supreme Leader as The Great Helmsman?
Wonders will never cease!
What happened, the suck-money did not arrive in time, or they are not so much worth when changing them to GBP?
Just call it Nagy Magyarorszag and be done with it…the rest of the 64 counties can catch up later!
