Leading Hungarian protestant churches push for official recognition in Hungary of all “global” religions

Fidesz parliamentary group leader Janos Lazar asked the Hungarian Reformed Church and the Hungarian Lutheran Church to name the global religions and religious communities which they believe should be added to the circle of recognised churches in Hungary.

In a letter, Lazar asked the two churches to specify the global religions and religious communities that “have demonstrated that their teachings promote values and their social services benefit the community.”

Earlier on Wednesday the two churches asked Lazar to widen the circle of recognised churches when updating the new church law.

The leadership of the Hungarian Reformed Church and the Hungarian Lutheran Church had asked Lazar to add more religious communities to the 14 recognised churches in the new cardinal law, the communications services of the Reformed Church told MTI in a statement on Wednesday.

[The law should] “recognise the church status of all global religions and religious communities that have demonstrated that their teachings promote values and their social services benefit the community both in a narrower and wider sense,” it said.

Lazar announced last Friday that the church law will be repealed for “technical reasons” and reintroduced for adoption before the end of the year.

On Monday, the constitutional court ruled that the church law was unconstitutional, along with two other recent laws.

Lazar said the new version of the church law would be submitted and expected to be passed in the extraordinary sessions planned between the holidays.

The opposition Socialist party also sent an open letter addressed to Lazar and Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics, asking them to reconsider the church law along the constitutional court’s concerns, so as to avoid that its revised version should still be in conflict with the constitution.

Good for the churches. I am sure they will attempt to do the best they can.

But does this idiot Lazar that a government selecting religons to “draw up a list” of recognised religone, is raw Facsisim?

Where is the Catholic, Jewish, Muslim lists?

Man. The imcompetence of this government is getting past the humorous stage.

    It’s entering the surreal….

Stop worrying so much, Obnoxious in Budapest, MAZSIHISZ J.w.sh is among the recognized 14 churches.

    • Viking says:

And here ‘leto’ uses his ‘hidden’ anti-s*m*t*sm again, a knee-jerk reaction claiming every one against Fidesz are ‘j*ws’
To coward to stand up for it, though

Could be for the simple reason some of the leading Fidesz politicians are just that, ‘j*ws’
And we should not forget Mr Arthur Finkelstein, the homo-sexual ‘j*w’, who fixed the Fidesz’ victory in 2010, at least according to their own assesment

Who’s worried, Wannabe Szalasi? I go to church every Sunday. Do you? If you do (which I doubt), it certainly isn’t a Christian one.

    • Leto says:

It’s you who seem to be worried, Obnoxious in Budapest. :D (I don’t mind that at all.)
I don’t go to a Christian church on any Sunday since I’m an atheist.

  4. I love Hungary says:

At least that explains you anti-Semitism.

It’s the Christians in Hungary that use their faith as a fulcrum for hate of non-Christians that are truly troublesome- and basically, psychotic.

Where do you “fit” under the new Constitution? Hungary is now a Christian country.

Are you now a second-class Hungarian? Is Atheism on the list of 14?

@I love Hungary “Who’s worried, Wannabe Szalasi?”… “At least that explains you anti-Semitism.”

Are you talking to Leto? You are a funny guy! Or maybe psychotic? Hmm.

    Obnoxious in Budapest:

I really find you more and more boring: “Egyszerű vagy, mint a faék” (you’re so simple as a wooden peg)…

Atheism is not a religion so it shouldn’t be on this list. As an Atheist, or a person with any other belief for that matter, I fit well under the new Constitution. That’s none of your business anyway, got it?
Besides I’m not an anti-Semite and I’m not a philo-Semite. Yes, Hungary is a Christian country as for her culture. Any problem with that?

That was an outright lie, then Fidesz qualify very hard what “any other belief” would be
Only if Fidesz allows “any other belief” it can be recognised as a church and get equal treatment as “any other belief” approved by Fidesz
That is of course very Christian and Hungarian

Yawn! I mean shhhhhhh there are H.n.g.r.ns in the house, don’t want them to ‘catch on’! I mean y.w.n.

@Erik, this site isn’t boring, just the same old stuff from the same ole duo… missing the fun exciting jerks like Ricsi, Law, etc. Guess they finally got run out of town?

Hey Viking, nice to see you!
