Celebrated Hungarian novelist/poet forbids “mouthpiece” state radio to air his works

Acclaimed Hungarian contemporary writer and poet Lajos Parti Nagy has forbidden the public radio to air any of his works in future because he doesn’t share the views of what he described as Hungary’s “mouthpiece” public media.

Parti Nagy, who has won some 30 literary prizes among them the most prestigious Kossuth Prize in 2007, said “it was only obvious to me that I’m going to refuse to be part of this state-monopolized mouthpiece of a public media” when he was approached by Magyar Rádió seeking to air one of his radio plays.

Since the early 1980s, Parti Nagy has published over a dozen novels, short stories and books of verse, many of which have been made into radio plays and adapted for the stage. [index.hu]

Parti Nagy is a perfect example of the fact that even an ass can become a successful writer.

Both Lajos Parti Nagy and GuessWho seem to be dissident personalities. Nagy can be blamed for “subversion of state power”; GuessWho is guilty of introducing the word “ass” on this intellectual political forum.

I truly hope that Orban will receive some solutions to handle this kind of rebels from our loved business partners, the People’s Republic of China.

I remember for example 余杰 (Yu Jie), he was also a foul-mouthed writer and blogger just as GuessWho and Nagy, but the government solved this problem by bringing him to an undisclosed location with a black hood forced over his head. Later on he was stripped naked and made to kneel on the ground while plainclothes policemen pelted him with blows to the head and body, slapped him, made him slap himself, bent his fingers backward, kicked him in the chest, and stomped on him. They also took photos of him and threatened to post them on the Internet.

That day, Yu started to understand the concept of “harassment”, and he hasn’t been using the words “ass”, “dumb” or “corrupt” ever since.

I’m really not a big fan of government censorship, surveillance or house arrest, but in the case of Nagy and GuessWho something needs to be done to stop their madness.

        “on this intellectual political forum”

‘Intellectual’ my a*s. You can’t even make a distinction between an ‘ass’ and ‘a*s’. Besides which, ‘intellectual’ (as opposed to ‘know at all’) implies honesty and truth …

    • GuessWho says:

I’ll take that as a ‘Yes’

You are so right, – I was truly shocked by such vulgarity because since I found this website over 2 years ago, never ever have I seen such crude horrible shocking language.

As a true intellect myself, clearly evident by every word I’ve ever written, I verily believe we must protest, because it is our responsibility to prevent this website from falling into the hands of such low class unintellectual slobs.

      Olga, FYI (from Google Dictionary):

      ass (noun)

1.A hoofed mammal of the horse family with a braying call, typically smaller than a horse and with longer ears

      2.(in general use) A donkey

      3.A foolish or stupid person

I thought that this was an intellectual conversation where people understand the meaning of a word. I am shocked at the vulgar mindset people seem to have here …

Both Olga and Feher Gyorgy are being ironic to make a point.

You, on the other hand, have insulted (however innocuously, unimaginatively, and childishly) a well-loved Hungarian with many times as much talent as you, without even hinting at why you hold him in disdain.

I find it interesting that Olga gets so upset at American in Budapest and I Love Hungary when they insult Hungarians, but doesn’t seem to mind when you do it.

I don’t know Mr. Nagy personally, so you may indeed be correct in calling him an ass, but only an ass would toss insults like that without even justifying them. Maybe you think that his principled stand against the government is “ass-like” behavior, but you don’t indicate as such, so we can only judge you by your inability to understand sarcasm and your flippant and derogatory attitude towards talented, successful, principled Hungarians.

Correction: Lajos Parti Nagy is actually celebrated only by a certain type of people who live in the central districts or suburbs of Budapest.
He is an archetype of what is known as “szadeszkretén”… :)
“Szadesz” was the pejorative name of a now defunct extremist “left liberal” political party and “kretén” probably needs no translation. :)

  5. Nagy Vagy? says:

I suppose the language of the gutter and those that use it amount to the same thing in any non-culture.
Do you think this guy is related in any way to Imre Nagy?
“Szadesz” was the pejorative name of a now defunct extremist “left liberal” political party”
If we could substitute “Fidesz” for “Szadesz” then the truth be out!
