Chief financial adviser to Budapest mayor quits amid ongoing budget crises

János Atkári, chief financial adviser to Budapest mayor István Tarlós, has quit his post effective February 1, the two announced in a statement, index.hu reports.

Tarlós and Atkári have discussed their working relationship and both agreed that in the current state of affairs it makes no sense to continue with this working relationship, the statement said.

Atkári has served in various posts under the previous liberal Budapest administration since 1991, and has headed up market research company Pénzügykutató Zrt since 2006.

His resignation comes amid several ongoing financial crises involving the city, most notably what Tarlós has warned is the treat of imminent bankruptcy for public transport operator BKV Zrt, a scenario that Atkári last month warned could “bring down” the entire national economy.
