Survey finds minority of Hungarians see country’s EU membership in positive light

Less than half of Hungarian see membership of the European Union as good for Hungary, according to research institute Szazadveg.

Szazadveg said on Tuesday that 49 percent of its sample saw EU membership as beneficial.

Fully 38 percent said the drawbacks outweighed the advantages while 13 percent were unsure.

Left-wingers were less critical of the EU than centrists or right-wingers.

Fully 70 percent of ruling Fidesz party supporters rejected strengthening ties with the EU. This was true of 82 percent of radical nationalist Jobbik supporters, the survey found.

People closer to the top of the social scale tended to be Europhiles while poorer people were more critical.

Fifty-eight percent of the respondents did not support further enlargement of the EU, the report said.

The survey of 1,000 randomly selected adults was conducted between January 19 and 23.

Everyone who has 2 braincells at least dislikes the EU, the rest is still groveling to the authority and think of them as saviors or some kind of insurance because they like to live in denial and just lay back and take it, or hope for some miracle…if they are not preoccupied with feeling manly watching stupid sports, porn or a pathetic reality show.

I think you are mistaken, Tom.
It seems like people who make money see that beneficial, and the poorer guys just don’t have a clue.
Sincerely, EU helped a lot our company, when the local Hungarian company fucked up our contract… So, I see more benefits from EU…

Huh? Didn’t even mentioned classes. Yes the EU helped just like the IMF always “helps” everybody, you should’ve failed and sued. My comments won’t appear WTH?

        • Russian in Budapest says:

We failed, but came back by rolling ads in EU (we did not receive any money except from the owners personal accounts). Sue? Won’t help, the translation of the contract into Hungarian is not the same as it sounds in English. That’s why the whole commotion was a terrible mess and we’ve lost all of the clientele… And the contract is just a paper terminated by translation.

What are you talking about, I didn’t even mention class distinctions. You might see more “benefits” but that is socialist short term thinking

Look long term, if the VAT would drop and business taxes too, the country would florish with businesses.
Problem with energy? Get subsidies on geo-thermal electricity it would be producted LOCALLY… It’s a club, but you have to be social in the club, not like “i’m the one and only and you all suck” type… That’s not the way to enter the club… Look at Czech? Why Magyars are worse?
You have to vocalize and publicize all the laws. You have to go international, or you’ll end up like Hungary today, waiting for huge companies to invest, but fucking up all of the med and small businesses.

I even see a perfect way of Monetization of Hungary as an exchange point between East and West…
