Quotable: Gábor Török on the potential for an opposition landslide in 2014

“Fidesz could benefit a lot in 2014 if it can hold onto a narrow lead, but if the left moves ahead by a small margin, Fidesz could even lose its one-third support, which obviously means the opposition would get a two-thirds majority”

Political analyst Gábor Török on how Hungary's new electoral system and recent polls showing the gap between Fidesz and the opposition Socialists narrowing to fewer than ten points may impact the ruling party's prospects in the next scheduled general election. Török analysis echoes that of a Socialist official who recently said his party could gain a supermajority thanks to the changes to the electoral system put in place by Fidesz. It’s like weighing up the likelihood of being shot vs being hanged.

  • Observation

Hungary’s real problem is it never developed a governing class and nobody seems to know how to run a country. I admit that I prefer the socialist’s version of malfeasance to Viktor’s

  • Vidra

So basically Fidesz didn’t do any risk assessment on this law either, in just the same way as nobody senior enough seems, when it was appropriate, to have asked “what could happen if the EU doesn’t like this law?”

Personally speaking, I’d hate to be executed by an incompetent hangman (Fidesz) because you might survive if you were shot by a cowardly gunman (wonder who?).

    • Leto

Your hangman-gunman metaphor doesn’t make much sense.

      • Vidra

To follow on BB’s comment, the difference between Fidesz and MSZPO is about as significant as whether you die by hanging or shooting. With me so far? Good!
Fidesz has not been as competent as it should in terms of its legislation – even Orbán admitted as such, hence the incompetent hangman. Meanwhile, MSZP was simply afraid of making the tough decisions necessary to put the country on the right path (hope you might agree at least partly).
So, there you have it, the country dies a slow agonising death (lack of investment funds, falling currency, rising unemployment, inflation) under Fidesz, compared with MSZP who damaged Hungary but certainly didn’t break it.
Clear enough for you now, sir?

“the country dies a slow agonising death .. under Fidesz,
compared with MSZP who damaged Hungary but certainly didn’t break it”

Yeah, that certainly speaks for itself. :D :D :D
          You see red-white-and-green as red-red-and-red.

          • Leto

            sorry, red-white-and-red.

  • NWO

No risk of this happening. There is ample to to amend again the election laws.

    • Leto

      “No risk of this happening”

      Let’s hope so.

“There is ample to to amend again the election laws”

When? After this absolutely terrible accident would happen? I doubt there would be time to amend the election laws then.

  • Viking

The real test of Fidesz democratic ambitions will be if this scenario really occurs 2014, that Fidesz actually will lose that election – Will Fidesz then keep these rules or as NWO predicts, Fidesz will suddenly, eagerly applauded by ‘leto’, come to some new conclusions that it is not always good to have a strong ruling party…
