TV reporter quits after falsifying racial attack story

RTL Klub presented the wrong man as the victim of an anti-Semitic attack on Tuesday.

RTL Klub reported that a man around 70 was beaten by young people last Friday because he is Jewish.

The report, made by András Novák, failed to state accurately that it was a 58-year-old man attacked, not last Friday but about 45 days ago on Kertész utca.

Chief rabbi Róbert Fröhlich said he had clarified these inaccuracies when the interview was taped with the reporter and “yet something else was aired.” The channel made an apology and reported Wednesday evening that the incident occurred on May 4 and its victim was a man around 60 and not the elderly man who was presented as an “illustration” on Tuesday.

RTL Klub news director Róbert Kotroczó said an internal inquiry was underway as the reporter seriously violated regulations. After the internal inquiry Novák realised that he had committed several serious professional mistakes and left the channel by mutual consent.

  • justasking,

    Given today’s economy, I wonder if this reporter thinks what he did was worth losing his job over?

      I’m actually surprised somebody was fired at RTL Klub because of this. Tempora mutandis.

    So 56 years old, not 70.
    So 45 days ago, not last Friday.
    So somewhere else, not in Kertész utca.

    We don’t know if the “rest” of the story is accurate enough though. :D

    RTL Klub do not care one jot about misrepresenting the news. In reality they would not even make any news programming if they had the choice, but they have to by law!

    No commercial channel wants to be a bastion of correct journalism, they just want to make money, that is why it is called commercial television. News is a headache and can piss many people off in the wrong places, politicians, advertisers…. news is an expensive and risky business!

    Antónia Erös is cute though, and if I had to score her performance, I WOULD DEFINITELY GIVE HER ONE :)

    It is any better because the beaten man was 56 years old and that it took place on a different date and the location was different? The fact that a person was beaten because of his religion is not bad enough?

    Only a racist like Leto seems to think that is okay

      @Gee,

      ‘It is any better because the beaten man was 56 years old …’

      No, it wouldn’t, and you’re right. So, why lie about it? I mean think about it…moving the date up a measly month and a 1/2, adding 12 years onto the vic? Doesn’t pass the smell test with me somehow.

      Was the guy really attacked because of his religion, or was it simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

      @All,

      Does anybody have any more info on this case?
