Quotable: Viktor Orbán on building integrity in government

“A country can be successful only if adequate political and economic systems go coupled with the commitment and integrity of civil servants.”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, addressing a graduation ceremony of young police officers at the National Public Service University in Budapest. In his speech to the new officers, Orbán said the government had successfully put to an end "a world in which justice served criminals" in which "it could be assumed that criminals and the police are in cooperation," and had begun to change the reputation of the police from "a synonym for meek simplicity" to "hard working and highly educated people with a high degree of dedication." ….and if your new campus is built by people connected to me”.

    OV seems to have the words right. One wonders if he realises just how far away from this ideal the country is at this stage.

    Well, Ok! Get started, Viktor. We’re all watching with bated breath.

    Google “country can be successful only”. Quite fun to see the alternative views….and the famous author of one of them.

    What’s next? An alcoholic giving medical advice?

      @Louise,

      ‘An alcoholic giving medical advice?’

      If they’re a functioning alcoholic, it’s possible.

        “If they’re a functioning alcoholic, it’s possible.”…..it might be…..VO and integrity is an impossible combination though.

          Not at all, if you look at from his point of view.

          As we are about health care, I believe the word is “pronoia” what describes that medical status when it makes perfect sense. Otherwise not a chance…

    I wonder what VO could possibly have said that would not be pounced on by his detractors?

    I read the article in Hungarian (understood 75%) – looks like 98% of the graduates found jobs and they are a better educated group than the “old timers”

    I heard from Hungarians that Police Officers and teachers were poorly paid and if true, all the education and speeches notwithstanding, these professions will not attract a large number of competent people especially if they are expected to support families on low wages

    However, if 98% of the graduates found jobs (I assume in the police force) that’s a good sign.

      @Olga,

      ‘However, if 98% of the graduates found jobs (I assume in the police force) that’s a good sign’

      Shhh, I don’t think some people want to hear that.

    How to be run a country – Hungarian style: 1) Lie to the people to win the election 2) Steal from the people when you’re in power 3) When things go even worse than before, tell the people that life in Hungary is gonna be a true fairy tale – it’s just a matter of hours, days, weeks, months, …
