US Ambassador presents award to Hungarian gay, lesbian support group

US Ambassador Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis presented an Active Citizenship award to the “Hatter” Support Society for Gays and Lesbians in Hungary on Monday in recognition of their anti-discrimination efforts.

Kounalakis said at the awards ceremony that President Barack Obama had declared June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. She added that the Active Citizenship award was granted to the organisation because it had done much for the community.

Hatter is one of the longest-standing LGBT organisations in Hungary which also supports other organisations and helps the development of LGBT organisations outside Budapest, she added.

Hatter operates a telephone support line, offers legal help to LGBT groups, maintains an HIV/AIDS information line and carries out studies and research into trans-gender health issues. It has been involved in consultations between the Hungarian government and civil society about LGBT issues.

The US Embassy in Hungary launched an initiative to recognise active citizenship in January 2012 to recognise citizens and organisations that are working to make a difference in their communities.

    What would the US say, if a foreign country would promote all kind of political visions in their country? The US wouldn’t except it.

      The Hungarian Government is an absolute farce and is steadily making life socially and economically worse for it’s people than it already has been for the past 20 years.

      Respect and Equality are not “political visions”. The US itself recognises that it has much work to do to achieve equality and respect for it’s own citizens and acknowledges that this has been achieved to a much greater extent in other countries already. That doesn’t mean that they cannot recognise and promote this same work in countries like Hungary & Russia!

      The sooner backwards, intollerant, religious rhetoric like yours dies out, the better it is for this planet.

    It shows the real face of that “christian” US president. The US could be proud in the past of their high moral standarts, now it became one of the most immoral countries on the world, also one of the big promoters of dirt and sick vesions.

    Excellent. Sometimes in the past it has seemed like the West had simply forgotten Central and Eastern European Countries when it came to work like this, but things are changing for the better. The negative comments from “Géza” just go to show how important work like this is in Hungary, as sadly there is still wide-spread bigotry and homophobia in the country.

    By the way, if I am so unlucky that you already have children, just remember that you should not take them to feed the ducks. The Mallard Duck is the mammal with the highest occurence of homosexuality (there goes your argument that it is not natural). If you decide on culling the duck population on these grounds, just make sure to go after the ones with the body slightly tilted to the right when they fly; they must be left wingers!

Whether I believe in their right to do what comes natural for them or not is not a question about for or against; it is a matter of accepting that everybody has natural rights as long as those rights do not conflict with or reduce the rights of others. Are you really so simple minded that you do not understand the difference between freedom and oppression?

            Being against homosexuality is irrational no matter how you twist and turn it. No difference than being against breathing, eating, farting, or anything else natural. You will find homosexuality among all species of mammals, but only homophobia in one; so it is actually your irrational fear of something natural that is completely “unnatural”. Are you also afraid of lightening or plants that are not green?

            I have never heard of any homosexuals who spoke of eradicating heterosexuality, so in which rational way do their sexuality infringe on your right to be heterosexual? In no way! Actually, you are the one who is a threat to the rights of others, so you are in fact a much bigger problem for all of us than homosexuals.

            No matter which argument you can come up with against homosexuality, it will be based on irrational fear or religious bigotry. You can call yourself atheist all you want, but if you promote “political views” based on Christianism, then you are a hypocrite as well as a religious bigot.

            The dictionary definition of a bigot is “a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.” How is acceptance of homosexuality bigotry in any way?

    Sooner or later, society catches up with new scientific discoveries; it is called \progress\. The fact that homosexuality was seen as a deviation earlier is not an argument. In the 19th century, cocaine was used as a local anesthesia and for a couple of decades in the middle of the 20th century, neurosurgeons thought that lobotomy was an advanced cure for psychosis.

    Maybe it is time you cancel your membership in Flat Earth Society and join the modern age. If you refuse new information and knowledge then you will never make any progress. As the proverb says: \A wise man will change his mind, a fool never will\.

      Actually this was “regress”. Maybe you should broaden your mind a bit as far as the concept of “progression” goes.
      FYI, a Greek mathematician and engineer invented the steam engine in the 1st century in Europe but steam engines were put to use only in the 18th century in Europe.
