Hungary awards medal to leading German critic of Beneš decrees

Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi awarded German MEP Bernd Posselt the Order of Merit Commander Cross of the Hungarian Republic on Wednesday, the ministry press office said.

Posselt, a Christian Democrat politician, spokesman for the Sudeten German Association and chairman of the Pan-European Union in Germany, was awarded in recognition of his efforts to promote diverse and friendly relations between Hungary and Germany and for his activities representing the interests of European minorities, the statement said.

Posselt expressed appreciation of Hungary’s role in advancing German and European unity, and added that he had been involved in the organisation of the Pan-European picnic as a colleague of Otto Habsburg’s.

Commenting on recent political attacks against Hungary he said “they were completely unfounded”, adding that by including a reference to Christianity in the new constitution, Hungary had made an important contribution to enforcing European values.

    Hungary of course implemented its part of the “Beneš decrees” by expelling Hungarians from the German minority, something mostly forgotten in today’s Hungary

    The older members of the German minority in Hungary have though not forgotten it, then as friends to me from that minority states that elderly members are still afraid to declare themselves as Germans in Hungary, especially after the rise of “Jobbik”

    @Viking,

    ‘that elderly members are still afraid to declare themselves as Germans in Hungary, especially after the rise of “Jobbik”’

    I can see how that could happen, given what they would have experienced/gone through…and I don’t blame them one bit.

    How do the members of this community, say, who are your and my age feel? Do they too, hold reservations?

    I wonder, given Europe’s past, is it too immature to/ too intolerant/paranoid, to handle ‘multiculturalism’ as say Canada or even the US; considering ‘that is all we know’?

    Well all the elderly ‘Germans’ or Schwabians that I come into contact with are not afraid to declare themselves as Schwabs should the need arrive.The problem lies,imo,the likes of Viking et al making out Jobbik to be more radical,extreme,racist nutjobs than they actually are.

    Should Viking troll,sorry,stroll down to Baranya megye for instance,he will find whole villages of ‘Germans’ just doing fine.Does he honestly think for one moment that these elderly Germans are timid cowardley folk that scuttle into their wine cellars when they hear jobbik mentioned?I for one have spoken with jobbos.As a Schwab,I’m all for them.

    @JA. I don’t think elderly Schwabs have any reservations about anything in particular today.Given theirs and Hungarians general problems with occupation by the former Soviet Union for God knows how many years,today (although decadence is rapidly rearing its ugly head)I think Hungary is a joyous place to be.Many folk just want ,myself included,to be left alone.

    Looney lefties like Viking ,Wolfi AiB etc are no better than the hobby nutzi Hungarians that haunt internet forums.

    I shall be in Baranya in September.I will have fun.I shall mingle.My suitcase will be full of paprika powder and smoked bacon when I leave and of course,the ubiquitous red enamel cooking pots.They’re so quaint,jolly and cheap.Yes indeed by golly.

    As an aside,this board gets so depressing with all the name calling and the same old trolls banging on the same old liberal keyboard.You live your life and let others live theirs without any politically correct, anti this and anti that legislation that is so prevalent in fu*ked up western europe.

    @the alter ego,

    ‘Looney lefties like Viking ,Wolfi AiB ‘

    I agree with your assessment regarding Wolfpup and the Ugly American, as for Viking, he is anything but ‘looney’;shockingly passionate about his political convictions, is more like it. :)

    A neighbor of ours is Schwab, emmigrated from Hungary, I believe in 96′ or 97′. He and his family, are completely immersed in the Hungarian community where I live.
