Quotable: Tibor Navracsics on democracy and stability

“Hungary is a stable democracy. While European governments are failing everywhere, in Hungary a strong two-thirds majority has ruled for two years.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics, in an interview with Magyar Hírlap on Thursday in which he also said that anti-Semitism is not more widespread in Hungary than in any western country. [magyarhirlap.hu]

Nice slip in the translation (or perhaps not). Governments govern, tyrants and dictators rule.

Democrat, I don’t think it’s a slip in translation. The literal translation of Iranyit is ‘gives direction’, or ‘leads’.

Whatever word you use, it’s more the disjoint between the clauses that makes the quote ridiculous.

So Hungary is two-thirds of the way to one-party rule? Why didn’t the official name for Hungary change back to “people’s republic” then?

OK, OK, I think I’ve finally worked out what’s going on.

Those funny Fidesz-KNDP guys are meeting in the kocsma every Sunday night and having a bet on who can get the funniest quotes in ‘Politics.hu’.

If this isn’t failing, then I’d hate to see his definition of failure.

OK, it does not make any sense at first sight, but ask any inbred degenerate in the Hungarian countryside and they’ll tell you that this man is a genius (well, they probably can’t pronounce the word ‘genius” but they will hold their thumbs up when you mention the name Navracsics and they have already their bus ticket for the next ‘Peace March’).
