Parliament voted on Monday to restrict the authorities of the National Judiciary Office (OBH) president and decided that the OBH chief will not remain in office after his or her appointment expires even if parliament fails to elect a new head.
Under the amendment proposal approved by 249 votes in favour, 2 against and 77 abstentions, some of the OBH president’s authorities will be transferred to the National Judicial Council (OBH). For instance the OBH will have the authority to give priority handling to certain issues that affect a large part of the public or are considered highly important.
Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics submitted the proposal to parliament after the Venice Commission had raised concerns in connection with the relevant Hungarian regulations.
