Parliament voted on Monday to scrap pension supplements for people whose “pre-1990 activities are not compatible with democratic values”.
Affected persons will be selected by the end of October.
According to the bill submitted to parliament by two MPs of the ruling Fidesz and five MPs of the radical nationalist Jobbik parties, supplements will be stopped as of January 1, 2013 for people who participated in dismantling democracy between 1945 and 1949, participated in retaliations after the 1956 revolution, worked as secret services informers between 1948 and 1989 or became “unworthy through their leading positions” in public administration, the communist party, or its youth arm.
According to the justification of the new measure, “pension privileges” of officials of the communist regime underwent scrutiny in 1991, but many retained them even though their activities in the past made them “unworthy”.
