Parliament votes to scrap pension supplements to former communists

Parliament voted on Monday to scrap pension supplements for people whose “pre-1990 activities are not compatible with democratic values”.

Affected persons will be selected by the end of October.

According to the bill submitted to parliament by two MPs of the ruling Fidesz and five MPs of the radical nationalist Jobbik parties, supplements will be stopped as of January 1, 2013 for people who participated in dismantling democracy between 1945 and 1949, participated in retaliations after the 1956 revolution, worked as secret services informers between 1948 and 1989 or became “unworthy through their leading positions” in public administration, the communist party, or its youth arm.

According to the justification of the new measure, “pension privileges” of officials of the communist regime underwent scrutiny in 1991, but many retained them even though their activities in the past made them “unworthy”.

“Affected persons will be selected by the end of October.”

I wonder how the selection process will work.

I do hope that it will make the following people exempt without any need to investigate further:
    1) parents of Fidesz politicians
    2) Fidesz politicians who were card-carrying members of the Communist Party (hello, Foreign Minister Martonyi!)
    3) Friends of Fidesz who enjoyed suspicious official posts (let’s not dig too deeply into what Pal Schmitt was really doing as director of the Astoria Hotel in the 1970s …)

I look forward to a similar bill before the next parliament to scrap the pensions of anti-democratic parties, for example Fidesz.

I think the bill forgot “burning the witches”

  • post-commie

Can I submit my neighbours to the list of candidates?

  • Leto. مؤدّب

It’s very regrettable that only pension supplements will be taken away from these persons. I hope at least the law will apply to a lot more than a few dozens of commie pensioners.

  • Robin

Yes, let’s take away their freedom too. I think forced labour camps is the solution.

    • Leto. مؤدّب

      Yes, that would be fine.

      • Viking

Yes, and we know who will be the first one to be locked up om May 1st, 2014…

    • Zsolt

Yes, I agree with you Robin.

  • Nod

What is the procedure for nominating and assessing individuals? Who can nominate? Who assesses? Is this published yet?

I agree with the concept provided it is done fairly and independent of friends or alliances… I’d like to know how this could possibly work in Hungary today.

I wonder in the name of hypocrisy, if Mr.Orban have included a copy of this decision along with his heartwarming greeting to Mr.Horn on his birthday too…?

    • Leto. مؤدّب

Yes, Mr.Horn’s pension supplement should be definitely revoked.

      • spectator

You are a really lovable piece of crap Leto.
Read your history lessons before you keep on talking rubbish like this.
Without Mr.Horn Orban would be the same nobody who he really is – you know that too, so stop acting like an ignorant moron, after all you are a learned person..!
Come on Leto, give it a try and face reality for one times sake – you’ll be surprised, I promise!
