The prime minister will head Hungary’s civilian intelligence Information Office under a ruling Fidesz-initiated amendment passed by parliament on Monday.
The amendment, passed with support from Fidesz and allied Christian Democrat lawmakers, stipulates that the prime minister has the right to delegate some of his management authority to the state secretary heading the Prime Minister’s Office.
The law also stipulates that in future the government, rather than the ministries, will define the range of information the national security services are obliged to publish.
The Information Office, which collects confidential information in connection with foreign countries, has so far operated under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry.
