Ethnic Hungarian population in Slovakia dwindles to 8.5%

Ethnic Hungarians live in majority in only two sub-county units in Slovakia, in Dunajska Streda and in Komarno, census data revealed.

The proportion of ethnic Hungarians is on the wane in all southern sub-county units except Dunajska Streda where ethnic Hungarians make up 75% of the population and Komarno where Hungarians make up nearly 64%.

In Bratislava over 14,000 have self-reported as ethnic Hungarians and in Kosice, the second largest town, the number is 6,382. Slovakia’s population is 5,400,000 of which ethnic Hungarians total 458,000 or 8.5% of the population.

In ten years the number of ethnic Hungarians has dropped by 62,000. In 2001 ethnic Hungarians accounted for 9.7% of the population.

First of all, a lot of gypsies who before declared themselves as Magyars now delare they are gypsies.
Secondly, old magyars die but young magyars do not have children (the same problem is in magyarorszagh).
Magyar coalition party (SMK) has spent 8 years in the Slovak parliament but it has not brought any investment to the Southern Slovakia because they were affraid that big investments/factories bring more slovaks to the South and the ratio of Magyars would decline. Instead, magyars have built statues of turuls and Magyar heroes having heroic speeches about the greatness of Magyars. The actual situation on the South is that there are no jobs. People have to travel to the North or west of Slovakia for jobs. However, the Magyar Coalition party avoided young magyars to talk fluently in Slovak language so they can go nowhere in slovakia. They have only two choices. Either stay in their villages taking small government support or to go to Magyarorszagh for jobs. Once they are there, they will never return to slovakia. I can see how the villages where magyar minority used to live are getting empty. Unfortunately, empty magyar houses are cheaply sold to gypsies from the North or East so in a short time the South will become a gypsy land. So, here are the reasons why the population of magyars is going down in Slovakia.
