Sir, The FT seeks to draw a comparison between the actions of the Romanian prime minister, in the context of the current constitutional crisis in Romania, and the longer term institutional reorganisation that Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, has been carrying out since coming to office in 2010 (“To Victor the spoils”, editorial, July 12). The fact is that the two processes are different in every respect. Indeed the comparison should serve to remind us of the differences between the two leaders’ approaches, rather than the similarities…
The FT might not approve of all of the changes the Hungarian government has introduced. And it is always helpful to have suggestions from critical friends with a good understanding of the political and societal dynamics of Hungary and central Europe. But it is unhelpful when authoritative newspapers use their editorial pages to draw erroneous comparisons.
Deputy state secretary to Financial Times: Don’t compare our Viktor to Romania’s Victor
