How’s this for a weird coincidence: This past Sunday, while Hungarians here and around the world were celebrating the 556th anniversary of one of the nation’s most famous military victories – the battle of Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade) – Hungarian soldiers were engaged in a skirmish in the neighboring Balkan capital of Sarajevo. According to various news reports, a group of three members of Hungary’s 170-strong contribution to the EUFOR peace-keeping force were on leave from their barracks in the city known as Saraybosna back when Belgrade was known as Nándorfehérvár when they came under attack by a group of Bosnian football hooligans. The three suffered light injuries and then “retreated” to their camp. Needless to say, we probably won’t be celebrating this Balkan battle in 2568. [index.hu]
