Prime Minister Viktor Orban received in his office Jeno Szasz, head of Romania’s Hungarian Civic Party, on Thursday, the prime minister’s press chief said.
Bertalan Havasi said they had reviewed political developments in Romania, the situation of ethnic Hungarians and the upcoming referendum on the dismissal of President Traian Basescu.
Szasz said it is in the interest of ethnic Hungarians in Romania and all Romanians that “the coup against Basescu should be unsuccessful” and he called on voters not to participate, Havasi said.
Orban confirmed that the European People’s Party was united in resolutely supporting Basescu and he would also use his influence to back him, he added.
The Hungarian Civic Party is a non-parliamentary player in Romania’s politics as opposed to the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ).
