Quotable: Tibor Navracsics on when the state “is good”

“The state is good if it serves the interests of its citizens and has no external goal for which it uses its citizens to accomplish, in the way that the state did under the Arrow Cross and Communist dictatorships.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration and Justice Tibor Navracsics, in an address last Friday to members of the European Federation of Journalists in Budapest. In his address Navracsics also pointed out that left and right "may view the important elements of public good in different ways." [kormany.hu]

“The state is good if it is a real democracy, independend judiciary, free press, equal accesss for all parties to all media,no media council, independend central bank etc….in general CHECKS AND BALANCES.
Hungary does have that under Fidesz rule. BTW…Ombudsman requests full report on Azeri transfer case…what happened to this?

    • spectator

It means, that it is the “interests of its citizens” to serve Orban’s raving lunacy, dummy!

Just try to imagine how would they live without!
When you don’t have to put up with the staggering expenses of the “freedom fight”, which swallowing all money in wain – the life would be so fu*king boring…

  • Vidra

So making sure that changes in the law so that Fidesz cannot lose the next umpteen general elections “serves the interests of its citizens” then? I’m sure that Rákosi believed that repression and awful living standards were in the long-term interests of Hungary’s citizens back then, so it’s yet another meaningless boast from a party that seems incapable of bringing tangible benefits to most Hungarians.

“The state is good if it serves the interests of its citizens and has no external goal for which it uses its citizens to accomplish”

Correct statement. Let’s keep in mind when it comes to the idea of a “United States of Europe”.

    Ceterum censeo MSZP delendum est.

The quote is reasonable and generally accurate. It just doesn’t apply to Hungary.

    Breaking news:
The court ruled in Klubrádió’s favor. The Media Authority has no right to appeal. But: The Authority about half an hour ago sent a letter to Klubrádió claiming that they won.

    WOW!

    And:
Breaking news. Tárki came out with the latest poll. Among the electorate as a whole Fidesz lost again from 18 to 15%

    The Washington Post

The Budapest Court of Appeals rejected a decision by the country’s Media Council invalidating Klubradio’s bid for a broadcast license, the latest in a long line of legal victories for the news-and-talk radio station.

    • justasking,

Huh…I thought the entire Judicial System was in Fidesz pockets?

Hope Orbi doesn’t find out about this.

      • spectator

I hope, that he’ll find out pretty soon, that he picked a bunch of morons as Media Council, who cannot even win in their own game!

Come on, what inadequate pile of mishaps..!

I wonder what Leto will say when he reads this

Tsk tsk, the Admiral would be extremely dissappointed.

“Today, Siófok Municipal Court handed down a shocking sentence in the case. Although, Daniel was found guilty of vandalism, but in the sentence, the judge added that Daniel’s act of vandalism was “morally positive” and “socially useful”.

Daniel received the mildest possible punishment for his vandal act; he was reprimanded, and ordered to pay HUF 121,600 in court costs. ”

What shall I say? It proves very well how much and how thorough cleaning and purging the Hungarian judiciary should really go under.

Agreed, also, what do you think of Jobbik’s proposal (that was voted down by MSZP and Fidesz) to make 2013 the year of Horthy?

        • Leto مؤدّب

That it was a typical attention seeking Jobbik-gig and Fidesz decided correctly.

          Ceterum censeo MSZP delendum est.

          • Magyar….

Off course it was ;) ;) , but if Fidesz was the one behind it, it would be the best idea this week, right?

The Admiral needs to be brought back into public life, everyone must know who he was, and the good things that he did.
He should be a role model for all future Hungarian politicians.

Let’s keep in mind when it comes to the idea of a “United States of Europe”

Given that Europe as a whole, and its population, have never had such a prosperous period for so long as after the political union of Europe (EU) was formed, the “United States of Europe”, which was always the goal, will happen

    • Magyar….

      In your dreams,sicko

      • MagyarViking

No, but in your and ‘leto’s’ nightmares obviously…

Just wait and see, maybe the change from NationStates to more regions based on Mega-cities will start earlier than planned?

Like regions for the the Barcelona/Marseilles, Malmő/Kőpenhamn, Wien/Budapest/Bratislava

That would be a very interesting development

    • justasking,

      @Viking,

‘Given that Europe as a whole, and its population, have never had such a prosperous period for so long as after the political union of Europe (EU) was formed, the “United States of Europe”

The EU will never be more than a financial union. You’re incapable, of forming a ‘country’ anything like the US or Canada.

The initial thought and aim was “a political union” and that is what it will be

We may try to go for something better than the US and Canada…

      • Leto مؤدّب

It’s highly dubious even that financial union could ever work since it would require too much political union.

        Ceterum censeo MSZP delendum est.

        • Viking

Correct, and that is why the aim was always “a political union”

          • justasking,

            @Viking,

‘We may try to go for something better than the US and Canada’

More Canada, like the Hungarian people. you can’t improve on perfection…the US could use some wiggle room :)

Memories run too deep in Europe, you seem to be in a constant state of mistrust with one another, and you have no concept what it means to consider yourselves ‘equal’.

Memories run too deep in Europe, you seem to be in a constant state of mistrust with one another, and you have no concept what it means to consider yourselves ‘equal’

I am not so sure about that any more with these long memories, if we look at France, Germany, Holland, Poland
Seems to work there rather good

The equal part is harder, then it is more about what you define into it – A rich German from Hamburg, driving around in an extremely expensive BMW?
A bit hard for any other German from Dresden to be his equal…

Even more for a Spanish waiter serving drunk Brits in Costa del Sol, or an unemployed Italian from Southern Italy

And who wants to be equal with any Greek?

One Man – One Vote, that is the concept we should go for, not that 400.000 inhabitants on Malta has the same say as 81,859,000 Germans
And the Lisbon Treaty goes down this correct road, that is why the Lisbon Treaty is so hated by different European Nationalists

    • justasking,

      @Viking,

‘Seems to work there rather good’

As long as France, stays on about the same/similar footing with Germany, they will be fine. Poland and Holland, are countries who traditionally, do not have very large ego’s.
      ———–

‘The equal part is harder, then it is more about what you define into it’

It’s not hard to define…it’s simply saying, that we too shall be heard and what we say matters.

For example…all the Provinces and Territories in Canada are considered equal. One’s not ‘better’ than the other.

Yes, you have some that are considered that ‘haves’ and those, that we call the ‘have nots’. It just means that the ‘haves’ will share more to make the have nots living easier. Do I consider the Province I live in better than say…Ontario? Okay, maybe I do…but, I still support sending additional monies to them, for you never know when the tides will change.

It’s about having a single vision, and moving together as one towards that goal. Does not mean, that there will not be bumps in the road…it’s about having faith that we’ll over come them.
      ——-

‘that is why the Lisbon Treaty is so hated by different European Nationalists’

That’s what I’m saying, none of you trust each other…it’ll never work beyond a financial Union. Deal with it.
