The head of the Georgian organised crime ring known as the Kutaisi clan has been arrested in Hungary, the national police ORFK said on its website on Wednesday.
The arrest of the leader of the ring, one of the most significant groups of Russian-speaking organised crime, was made in a Europol-supported operation that was carried out in several other countries and led to the arrest of 18 other members of the clan, ORFK said.
This is the first time in Europe that such a high number of Russian-speaking organised crime suspects have been arrested simultaneously. The arrest of the Kutaisi leader in Hungary is specifically a significant blow to Russian-speaking organised criminals, ORFK said, adding that the entire leadership of the clan was also arrested.
The joint European operation focused primarily on Bari in Italy, where seven suspects were arrested.
In the raid several guns, an excessive amount of drugs and over 100,000 euros were seized, ORFK said.
