Hungarian government rejects McCain’s comments on Orbán, summons envoy

The Hungarian government considers US Senator John McCain’s remarks on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and relations between Hungary and Russia unacceptable and resolutely rejects them, the state secretary for economic diplomacy said on Wednesday at a meeting with US charge d’affaires Andre Goodfriend, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry earlier said that Goodfriend had been summoned to Levente Magyar’s office in connection with Republican Senator McCain’s remarks made at a Senate vote on the appointment of new US Ambassador to Budapest Colleen Bell.

During the meeting, Magyar told Goodfriend that Hungary welcomed the fact that full US diplomatic representation in Hungary has been restored thanks to Bell’s appointment, the statement said.

At the same time, the government is repeatedly asking senior US officials to check the facts before making remarks about Hungary, to ensure that their statements are based on truth, it added.

The Republican politician said on Tuesday that Hungary was “a very important country where bad things are going on” and while “a close ally in many respects … there’s no doubt that since taking office in 2010, the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has centralised power.” He also insisted that Hungary is “a nation that is on the verge of ceding its sovereignty to a neo-fascist dictator getting in bed with Vladimir Putin.”

Foreign Minister: Hungarian voters best answer to McCain
Hungarian citizens this year have given their opinion three times as to how they envision the country’s future, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told MTI on Wednesday in reaction to critical comments by American senator John McCain.

On all three occasions they clearly expressed their view, and everyone should respect this, he said. If someone bases their opinion of Hungarian affairs exclusively on press reports then they can easily get into the situation that their comments are not rooted in facts, Szijjarto added.

Asked whether Hungary was planning to go beyond issuing statements and take diplomatic steps, Szijjarto said the Hungarian embassy in Washington was in contact with the Senator’s staff and would consult with them about his remarks and background on which they were based.

Commenting on whether Hungary planned to take action to improve its deteriorated diplomatic relations with Washington, he said cooperation between Hungary and the US was excellent in two out of three areas, namely economic cooperation and security policy.

“There are open issues in political cooperation and it is in Hungary’s interest to resolve these without delay,” he added.

These Békemenet guys should just walk the walk, and stop to talk. It’s not very Catholic to see them so jealous of all the luxuries and properties our Glorious Fidesz Leaders buy all of the time…

No, its one of the hate groups.

“„If you stick around, you’ll be hanged/We’ll clear away this rogue filth!/The rope is tightening around your neck/ you must feel it already/Rest assured, all the rogues await to be hanged” – these are the words of a song calling for racist aggression of the racist rock band, „Vádló Bitófák” (cca: Accusatory Gallows). Blood and Honour Hungary has paved the way for „skinbands” like this during the course of its history of over ten years thus promoting racist „music” and the ideology of national socialism in Hungary. This hate group does not carry out extremist or directly violent act but provides for an effective forum for other extremist groups by carrying out a diverse range of propaganda activities. The B&H regularly participates in the organisation of the auxiliary events (concerts) of the neo-Nazi propaganda event, day of honour. Using their extensive international connections, they frequently invite foreign skinhead and hatecore bands to Hungary.”

Why do you call yourself Hungarian?
Do you look up to us, or are you attempting to smirr facts?

          • Hungarian

I admire many Hungarians. But, not the little boys in the Blood and Honor hate group.

Do you think they are part of a knitting club?

          • Varga

Why, are you claiming this is a nice family oriented christian group or something? Is it considered un-Hungarian to be against these types of groups in your eyes?

          • NoErica

It is un Hungarian to be like you and to pretend to be Hungarian.
You want to stay unanimous is one, but don’t pretend to be someone you are not.

          • wolfi

No, we “commute” between Germany and Hungary (and go on holiday to other countries …) to have the best of both worlds …
Even for my Hungarian wife (who really likes to visit her family) it would be too much to live all the time in Fidesztan …
But you wouldn’t understand that anyway …

          • NoErica

Yes, the ‘the best of both worlds’, you mean Germany is not perfect.
            Really?
            -You are kidding.
So are you saying that Germany is flawed?
            -You must be kidding.
Why don’t you go and try to fix Germany???
            -It is flawed, isn’t it?
P/S/. If you only visit Hungary periodically, how did YOU have visitors in Hungary the other month?
            Whom are you kidding?
            -Yourself?

          • wolfi

Though it’s none of your business:

My Hungarian wife and I have a house near the Black Forest and a house near the Balaton which we both use part of the year – when we’re not on holiday, in the USA e g
That’s why we have the best of two (or even three …) worlds.

          • Actually, Hungarians are moving out of Hungary in droves. We have so many in the US and the UK, especially professionals and young intellectuals. Why are so many leaving? Maybe your repeated subliminal “Death to Israel. Death to America” mantra doesn’t work for all Hungarians. If you want to recruit Jihadists, go to Syria, but stop poisoning young Hungarian minds in Hungary or in the Hungarian diaspora!

        • Hungarian

There are still plenty of active hate groups around. And a year ago I saw several skin heads at a rally in Budapest with their tattoo. Perhaps they had joined other groups. Follow my link to the Athena Institute for information on active groups.

How about the treatment of Palestinians in Palestine?
-By the way, even if someone believes the fairy tale of and about 911, there were no Iraqis on the plane and no weapons of mass destruction found, yet 1,000,000 innocent Iraqis killed.
            For what?
-Are you saying that not all life is as important?
Who will ever be held accountable for those deaths and the suicides of American soldiers all rooting and connected to the same incidence. (and the victims of 911).
            -Who are you lying to?
            Yourself?

          • Hungarian

Treatment of Palestinians is wrong. I am glad to see that some EU countries are recognizing Palestinian statehood. George Bush is a war criminal. But what does any of that have to do with hate groups in Hungary?

  • Hungarian

“the government is repeatedly asking senior US officials to check the facts before making remarks about Hungary”

McCain was not speaking as a US official, but rather independently as a US Senator. The executive branch of the US has no control over what members of the legislative branch says.

    • Democrat

That subtle but important distinction would not be understood by Orban and his team. They control the news, the legislature, the electoral rules, the civil service and more.

Like him or not, McCain made his points with little emotion and with the support of reports from independent sources. I agree with him that the US have made a bad mistake in this appointment. Weak ambassadors have been sent previously as a signal that Hungary does not matter much in the grand scheme of things. The picture has change and Obama`s team have responded badly. Orban`s bully boys will have her for breakfast, Goodfriend will be sidelined and the NAV investigations will stall.

      • Hungarian

Goodfriend will not be sidelined. He will be running the embassy and calling the shots. In a situation like this Bell will be the face of the Embassy, but she will have very little to do with the decision making regarding policy.

        • Democrat

I hope you are correct. Unfortunately the Government will only address “The Face”. She will be the one summoned and I would bet that she will make a fool of herself. Goodfriend appears to be knowledgeable, well advised and a master of the understatement. These are the qualities which have tied people here in knots. I fear she will not have the same poise and will rapidly be exposed as a lightweight. We can only hope that they keep the pressure up somehow. Doubtless they are watching these pages amongst all the other opinion gathering they undertake.

          • Hungarian

She’s a very smart women and proved herself capable of working on policy issues (it is not true that all she is “just” a TV producer, which takes some strong people skills in its self). I have no reason to assume she will be a push over.

Reports are that she has been studying the issues very intensively with the help of senior State Dept. officials.

I too wish that a seasoned diplomat would have been assigned, but I am not going to assume she will be a failure. Having a woman in this position might just catch the Hungarian government off-guard.

          • roderickbeck

You seem to be biased against women. I suggest you keep an open mind.

    • Géza

Well let’s be clear about one thing, a important US official like André Goodfriend, the U.S. chargé d’affaires from the US ambassy in Budapest is a huge fan of Eva Balogh’s liberal left colored articles on hungarian spectrum which he reads daily (his own words on that blog)

      What a joke!

      • Varga

Your a joke, are you jealous of how accomplished of a woman she is? She is a real 56-er and you can NEVER take away her honor. Imagine how hard it is for 56-ers in today’s age seeing what is happening now and feeling the feelings coming back to that time in their lives. You are a disgrace to the memory of those who tried to obtain freedom and died, only to insist Hungary go back to the way it was and possibly become even worse.

        • Géza

          Varga as lovely as ever!

Well about Eva Balogh, a real 56-er? She had a little role helping with a socalled underground “newspaper” in Pécs, but nothing serious (watch her interviews).

She wasn’t a hero at all Varga, just a young ignorent girl at the time, who thought, let’s go to the West. Nothing heroic about it. In the West she was indoctrinated by liberalism and socialism.

Secondly she belongs spiritually to the same left wingers who sold Hungary and it’s people to the communists / internationalists. So real fighters of 56 see her as a traitor.

She is very clear about her globalists views and what should be the future of Hungary and it’s people, so not a hungarian to be proud off.

Let’s honour the real hero’s of 56 and stop calling the names of people like Eva Balogh in on breath with those real hero’s who fought and died for our people, culture and country!

          • Varga

You are a disgrace to those who died and to those who survived, I bet you didn’t even know that many died just on route to the border………on foot……..in the cold, she has been honored by other 56 ers, so don’t be such a fool as to say such a thing about her being a traitor. You are a real pig!

          • Géza

first of all, thank you for your kind words Varga! Okay, now back to reality.

She has been honored by other 56 ers. You mean the ones who were part of ÁVH in 1956! For sure not by the real heroes of 56 Varga!

      • Hungarian

If you pay attention you would learn that he regularly meets with Hungarians on both the right and left. He is a very intelligent man and seeks multiple sources of information. So what if one of those is HS.

        • Géza

hhmm I never saw him post on hungarian ambiance for example or any other “right wing” blog or site. As I said he expressed his positive view about those articles on HS. Only people of the liberal left love those articles. It is very clear where his views came from, also his views about Hungary.

          • wolfi

hungarian ambiance ? You mean the Nazi site, little jobbo?

          • Géza

don’t confuse the party of your parents with a healthy nationalistic site…

          • wolfi

Repeating your idiocies doesn’t make them any truer …
I’m lucky to know that my parents were no Nazis and no NSDAP members and my father (as an soldier and recipient of the Knight’s cross) was declared an “also run” by the Allied authorities after 1945 …

Btw was your grandfather a Szalasy fan?

          • Géza

most childeren of Nazi’s deny their past, so I am not surprised. Besides that, your father didn’t get that knights cross because he was anti-nazi and fought the system, it only shows he fought for and was part of that system.

About the allied forces, never heard of Eisenhower’s “death camps” for regular German soldiers? Google it!

I have to dissapoint you, but none of my familymembers did or do admire lowerclass people like Szalasy!

          • wolfi

Ah, so you long for the glorious days of Horthy – you know how leto used to call this creature …
But the feudal system is gone forever – wake up, it’s the 21st Century!

          • Géza

We will be back in power sooner then you think my German friend.

            Have a nice evening.

          • roderickbeck

            A diseased version of nationalism.

          • Hungarian

Then pay more attention. He has given plenty of interview in right-wing papers and other right wing media. He meets with Fidesz interest groups regularly. Just recently he attended a breakfast meeting with Fidesz supporters and officials. He attended both the békemenet and the Internet Tax protest, etc., etc.

Do you think someone with access to the US’s powerful intelligence apparatus relies on a blog for all his information?

          • Géza

it is hard to read isn’t it. He can visit whatever he wants, but that was not the issue.

It is about his personal appreciation of Eva Balogh’s liberal globalist site! It shows who he is and his judgement is based on his personal liberal globalist views.

          • Hungarian

He complements all sorts of people. He is a diplomat. They try and stay in the good graces of all sides so they maintain open channels to many groups. That is their role – information gatherers.

I just re-read his post on HS. He makes the point that he looks for views from all sorts of audiences and that HS spectrum is a good source for one particular viewpoint. That’s all – read more into it if you like.

Look around and you will find him complementing people and groups from all sides.

The particular post was about him, so it not surprising he would comment.

          • roderickbeck

Dude, you are so far out of the mainstream of modern democracy that what you call the “right wing” is really the totalitarian right wing. You are not credible. You are an extremist. And please get rid of that silly icon.

  • Havelaar

“Hungarian government rejects McCain’s comments on Orbán, summons envoy”

Which doesn’t change the fact that
Hungary IS “a nation that is on the verge of ceding its sovereignty to a
neo-fascist dictator getting in bed with Vladimir Putin.”

    • NoErica

Weren’t there elections in Hungary this year?

      • Bowen

Yes, but they weren’t fair ones. Check the OSCE report.

        • NoErica

For sure. There is always a report that states the contrary. But that doesn’t mean anything.
Foreigners are not allowed to vote.
As it is the case everywhere, yet they are the ones criticising Hungary for not going in the ‘right’ direction. What direction?
          -The direction of Democracy?
Or the direction of outside interests?
-Hungary is for Hungarians to decide.
We don’t go to your country to dictate, and all we ALL put our pants on the same way in the morning, like it,or not.

    • Géza

Hungary IS “a nation that is on the verge of ceding its sovereignty and self-determination to a liberal left dictatorship called the EU!

BTW like all nationstates in Europe do.

      • wolfi

So just get Fidesz to leave the EU if they don’t like it – one less mouth (actually millions …) to feed for us Germans!
The other EU members will be very happy to use those opportunities when half a million Hungarian workers are sent home from Germany, Austria, the UK etc …

Never mind that the US has caused the recession on the first place not Hungary.
